So what do you think my problem is?
I've been tinkering around with someone's computer. It's a 750mhz Duron with windows 98. Really cheap and old everything else.
Anyway, here's what's going on.

I'd change the mobo man. I'm pretty sure the memory voltage on that board is locked at 2.5volts. 2 memory brands that I've had first hand experience with REQUIRED 2.7 volts to even be stable and pass memtest. Those being GeiL and Mushkin black level II. I'm sure other memory modules are like that ...

Not to hijack the thread or anthing, but I have a raptor and it's slow as crap. I can't figure it out, but I must have something wrong or just a bad drive. The drive works and all no problem, it's just slow. So slow that load times for anything on my 900mhz machine, 384mb of ram, 7.2k IDE drive are ...

I had that problem. The culprit was my northbridge fan. It would rev for about a minute after a cold boot then settle back down to its normal operating sound. Overtime, it got worse and worse until the revving would not stop. I took it out and gave it a couple shots of WD-40 and that fixed it. On my ...

Well, appears one of my sticks of ram (geil golden dragon pc3500) has died. Tried banks 1|3 2|4 and every combination between the two sticks and no post. Then I tried the sticks separately. One booted up no problem. The now known defective stick, got the same beee1, 2, 3, 4, 5eeeep error and would ...

Post problem
My computer isn't posting all the sudden from its shutdown last night. When I try to boot, I'm getting a long continuous 5 second beep that repeats. Any ideas what failed component makes that beep pattern?
Thanks,
Crimson

Flashing bios on new computer?
I have an IC7 here rev 1.0 and a new WD raptor, I read somewhere that I will need at least bio 1.3 for it to recognize the drive. Any ideas how to flash my bios from scratch? (would like to get bios15)

Internal/external cat5 wiring/wallmount with router?
I'm currently paying for 2 different cable subscriptions because my cable company told me it was "impossible" to use a router in my house given the setup of the house and where I wanted to wire to and from. And I don't like the idea and cost of wireless (if it would even work in my house). So, I ...

SATA vs IDE? benefits of SATA useless?
SATA can transmit 150mb/sec and IDE 66mb or so, isnt the peak hard drive performance like 43 mbs in everyday computing? Only benefit i can see from SATA over IDE is a slightly more convenient cable with a cost. Am I missing something here?

Hi,
I'm building a computer for someone that will serve for real basic stuff like email, word processing, excel, internet browsing, winamp, and light gaming, if any. Also has to be fast and current for years to come. So here is what I was thinking, keeping budget in mind.

Old thermal paste?
I recently put together a box for a friend using a 1.2ghz tbird, 38 cfm 6800rpm delta sk6 on an asus A7V 133-C. His cpu temp at load is 59 C. That seems a bit high for sk6 temps with the mini jet engine on it (i was expecting 35-40 at load). Anyway, the thermal paste i used was artic silver that i ...

I currently have my monitor set to 120hz @ 800x600 resolution. Inside a game i play at 1024x768 resolution (the resolution is selected within the game - my desktop config is still 800x600 @ 120hz). Now my question is when i run that game at 1024x768 is it running at 120hz? The highest hz my monitor ...
