Maxtor 7200 rpm 80 Gig

First of all Merry Christmas to all!!!

Second....

Having a little difficulty getting my new 80gig Maxtor to detect.

I'm running Win2kPro. Bios detects new H/D and shows both as Master Primary and Slave Secondary.

Primary jumper and IDE cable is on the IBM 32 gig and Secondary jumper on Maxtor 80 gig. Bios confirms this. Is there something I'm missing here? Thought it was all plug and play.

I'm a little confused by your post, you should have a Primary master & slave and a Secondary master & slave. If u have it on the same ide cable as the other HD make the IBM as the Primary master with the jumper setting to master, make the Maxtor the Primary slave with the jumper setting to slave and make sure the old drive is on the first connection on the cable. In your BIOS set detection to "auto". If u have the Maxtor on you Secondary ide cable (probably where your cdrom is) Make it the Secondary master with the jumper to Master and your cdrom jumper to slave, or if it is the Secondary slave leave your cdrom as it is and connect the Maxtor to the second connection on the ide cable and set the jumper to slave. Sorry for the confusion. I was rushing while typing.

32gig on primary master and 80gig on primary slave. That's what I did...... I must check the jumpers for the 5th time.

If the BIOS sees the drive, then your jumpers, and master/slave setings are ok.

New drives need to be partitioned and formatted before windows or Dos will assign them a drive letter, and use them.

To make it easy, connect it as master on the primary channel, settings jumper as master, and disconnect all others drives.

Boot into a Win98 startup disk and use Fdisk to make your partition(s). You need at least one partition to make the drive usable. Once you've used Fdisk and created the partition(s), reboot and format it right away.

Once this is complete, set the jumper back to slave, and set up your other drive(s) the way you want.
Windows will now see your new drive.

Ahhhhhh

I totally forgot about fdisk in msdos. I actually thought Win2k would let me format in disk management.

Win2K CD probably has the option to create partitions and format them, but I can't explain it as easily as I can using the Win98/Dos method

I disconnected my 32 gig on the primary master ide and installed the new unformated 80 gig Maxtor only to the primary master ide cable.

When I installed the win98 boot disk and waited for the dos prompt and typed fdisk a message saying no valid disk found. I also check my bios and it didn't pick it up either. I put the jumper on Master for the Maxtor and still nothing. Would having the Secondary master/secondary ide cable connected to my dvd rom and plexator have something to do with it not seeing the new h/d?

There are jumpers on the HD's, and usually a diagram showing how to set the jumpers to master/slave/single/cable select, and master with and without slave.

How is your jumper set on the new drive?

And, is the primary channel in the BIOS set to "autodetect"

Actually,
If you already have win2k up on your main drive you should be able to format under it

start > control panel > adminstrative tools > computer management > disk management > go to 2nd hd (it will be large black bar) > make sure drive is set to basic, not dynamic and create partition

your done.

Just my two-bits, you can also download a program from Maxtor, either Powermax or Maxblaster its a utility that will format your drive and install partitions quickly and fairly easily. Just don't install the E-Z Bios thing. Its a pain in the @ss.

Note: Make sure you have the newest version of FDISK for your Win98 startup disk before you partition your 80GB drive. Depending on the version, FDISK may not work correctly on drives larger than 64GB. The Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q263044 explains this in detail and provides links to proper files for your WIN98 or WIN98SE startup disk.
If FDISK sees your 80GB drive as only 16GB or less you need the new version.

ME users should read article Q263045 about problems with the FORMAT command on drives larger than 64GB.

It's probably easiest to partition the drive under Win2K

Well here is the run-down on the Maxtor 80 gig!

I could only format the H/D to 10megs and it still would not show up in the o/s. Showed up in the bios fine. My friend came over last night and helped me out. He's a hardware guru

Finally after 2 years off trouble shooting he ask my wife Jennifer where she purchased the h/d. Turns out PcMedic in Halifax is a very good company to deal with when it comes to software/hardware not to mention the prices are always just right.

Jen paid $316 CN for it out the door. Yes with taxes too. So my buddy called up his cousin that works at the location. Turns out that they've shipped back 4 80 gig h/d's last week do the same issues. Something about the board on the h/d or something.

So after all this I have to wait till tomorrow to return and pick a new h/d . I'll have them fdisk/format the new one at their shop to verify that the son-of-a-gun is working!

Nothing worse than getting something for Christmas or whenever right out of the box and it doesn't work. My wife was upset for me since she knew how much I wanted the new h/d.

So thanks everyone for your help. I should have it up and running by tomarrow morning!

Maxtor should have a HD utiltiy on their website
that allows you to setup and partition your new drive.
It is way faster than FDISK....

That is correct. Will use the utility when I get the new one tomorrow.
