Reboots are back!! Tried everything what could it be

Post by TrevGlas »

Ok if you didnt read my previous post I just put in a 2.8 c, had some random reboots, reseated the HS, and reapplied the AS5, then I didnt get a reboot for like 2 hours, then I JUST randomly rebooted again while playing EQ, what else could be doing this? Theres no metal to metal contact, temperature MAXES out at about 45-47c. Idles at about 30-32.

Powersupply is a 350 watt..... any suggestions!?!?!?!

Is it possible that putting my case on the carpet could be causing ESD through the case??

Did you install your chipset drivers? Are you running your RAM too aggresively?

Same memory I've been running for about a year... all I've done is replaced the CPU.. from a 2.4b to a 2.8c. Not overclocked at all, running RAM at its rated speeds 2,3,3,6.
What program should I use to test the memory... Prime95?

Oh yea chipset drivers ARE installed... the latest intel chipset installation utility.

use memtest86 to test the memory from a boot disc or a floppy disc.

does it only reboot during that game, maybe run prime 95 to stress test the cpu and cooling ?

Mostly on one game, but I've gotten a reboot twice, just in windows.
I started the RMA process just in case. I'll try memtest86 right now.

I created a bootable memtest86 iso..... 0 errors... would NOT clearing my CMOS have something to do with it?

Running out of ideas. Old processor does not have the errors.

If you're NOT overclocking, try enabling Spread Spectrum in the BIOS.

I'd look at your BIOS...perhaps reset to defaults, then double check everything.

Power Supply?

RAM may have been running for a year, but was running for a 533 CPU, now it's running faster for an 800 CPU.

Reseat all cables after properly discharging yourself and maintaining ground with case.

Try raising the cpu voltage an increment or 2? Perhaps your board undervolts enough for it to not even be stable at stock speeds.

Update - flashed the bios to the newest version, cleared the CMOS twice, reseated all the cables, and no reboots since yesterday. Locked my vcore at 1.6, set all my timings, and it seems to be running fine. Is it possible that its like "warming up" ? lol

Sounds like low rails on your PSU...look at what the voltages are in the BIOS.

Ok

CPU FAN SPEED = 5000 rpm
VCORE = 1.552
3.3v = 3.23
5v = 5.187
12v = 11.856

Sound about right? Is it normal for one of these to be idling at 45c !??!! When my room temperature is about 80-85?

Well with a room temp of 80-85, those temps are pretty good.

My 3.0 GHz P4 idles at around 42

I'd say try other RAM or disable auto-restart after crash and see if that helps

Sounds like a RAM issue. Try relaxing the timings or even running the Ram at a 5:4 ratio. Moving from 533 to 800 is going to tax the RAM. What brand/model Ram are you running? PC2700 by chance? PC2700 at 533FSB with a 1:1 will run at 266Mhz. At 800 with 1:1 will run at 400Mhz. I hope I did my math right! Even if you are not overclocking the cpu, you are overclocking the RAM by forcing it to run at 200Mhz DDR.

*update* I'm running 512mb of geil golden dragon pc3200 1:1

What it ended up being is that I put a bit too much thermal compound on the cpu, and it actually ended up holding more heat in than it actually dissipated... using probe, I found out that while playing EQ I had maxed it to the threshold.. which I have NEVEr done before. Thanks for all the ideas!!!

BTW yes the math is right :)
