What type of internet service do you have? Does the PC have two network connections setup to do ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)? You will need to have some external device supplied by an ISP that is your gateway.

VLANs are also used to minimize traffic in larger networks, but have routing between them setup so all computers can access everything. This also makes it easier to troubleshoot problems when you have a network with hundreds or thousands of devices in it.

If all you want to do is have both PCs connected to the internet then make sure you have a router. Connect each PC to the router, and you are done, no need for a second NIC in either of them.

Using one PC with two NICs and ICS works, but isn't anywhere near an optimal configuration if you ask me ...

Why do you want to have two NICs? If this is to be connected into the same network you will need some software (driver) to make it work properly.

Bridging is to connect two different network types (firewire and ethernet).

The 25 connection limit on your SW has nothing to do with DHCP, and is just a licensing issue. Cisco does the same thing with its SOHO model firewalls (PIX 501, ASA 5505) when you buy them. You get a license to have x concurrent users accessing through the device. This is not handled by DHCP at all ...

Did you read the instructions for whatever model of routers you will be using? They are usually pretty helpful in explaining what to put in the boxes.

General:

Local subnet = subnet that router is on
Remote subnet = subnet the other network uses (these MUST be different)

Yes, it would seem you have some sort of basic routing setup between the sites. I would say get the actual config of both routers on paper so you can check yourself. It is very possible that the config they put in blocks cross network traffic not destined for the internet (or port 80).

The 2600 series is at End of Life with Cisco, but if they are supplied and supported by the ISP I guess it doesn't matter much.

What subnet masks are you using to get those scopes? Usually those would be multiple subnets, and thus should cover multiple different scopes.

One easy way would be to do a scan of the external IP from anywhere using something like Neusses. Shields Up will do the same thing from any PC at the site.

Your hard drive is the most likely suspect. The network can only move data as fast as it can be read from a drive and written to the destination.

Besides you are getting very close to the limits, so everything would seem to be working right anyway.

Actually I think you are mistaken. The agent is needed to make a backup OF the server/computer it is installed on. Since you want to backup to that server it shouldn't be necessary. Just map as a network drive, and do a backup as a D2D backup to that drive.

Yep, there is no reason the Sonicwall NEEDS to handle DHCP. My guess is whoever you were talking to gave it out as a quick and simple answer to avoid a lot of troubleshooting and problem solving across multiple platforms.

Anyway you do need to have your Server 2003 (no such thing as XP Server BTW ...

If you didn't setup a username then you are using the default one. Try setting up a user on both machines with the exact same name, and use that. Sounds like you are just having problems with permissions.

Not only do you not need a VPN a VPN will never work to connect two computers on the same network. One of the requirements for VPN is that both computers belong to networks which use different IP ranges. Keep in mind that you are doing a transfer to/from the internet, and that will be the bottleneck, not your LAN speed. Wireless should work fine, maybe your router needs some tweaking to get it running better. Make sure you have the latest firmware, and some sort of security setup on it.
