having trouble....need new router or go powerline
ok so in my house im running a netgear wgr614 wireless router. my GF uses the wireless for her laptop, which its fine for, although it does drop connection at times and can be noticeably slow, but its fine for what she needs it for. I on the other hand got a PS3 this christmas and the wireless connection to it is terrible, ive seen anywhere from 56%, the high, to about 27 percent. needless to say it would probably be terrible for gaming and im very afraid to run an update on it, for fear of the connection dropping in the middle of it or the file getting corrupted, thus bricking my ps3. ive been contemplating powerline networking options, either the netgear 200mbps unit or the linksys 200mbps. Im aware that they will never reach those speeds but I would be very satisfied with 80mbps. should I try the powerline option or is there a better wireless router out there that can offer me the speed and stability I desire??

Wireless is often problematic for gaming..not the ideal setup. Nothing beats copper (cept fiber..but that's overkill). Yes powerline AC adapters are good..some people having mixed success in some environments..guess old wiring in a house can make them troublesome...I've used them in pairs with great success...had issues when using 3 at a time though. That was some of the Linksys models the VAR rep sent me for eval.

I understand that, I have 6mbps internet through comcast. what im really looking for is reliability.Keep in mind that you are doing a transfer to/from the internet, and that will be the bottleneck, not your LAN speed.
this is also the conclusion ive come to, unless the new wireless routers are better than my 3 yr old netgear.Wireless is often problematic for gaming..not the ideal setup. Nothing beats copper (cept fiber..but that's overkill).
the house were in is brand new, so old wiring wont be a problem, dont know how good a job they did wiring it though. I will just be using 2 adaptors, 1 down stairs for the PS3 and 1 upstairs that plugs into the router. I have no need for more than that. I was looking on newegg and it seems that the linksys ones have less issues than the netgear ones. cnet tested the netgears fastest though, but the difference it about 3 mbps, and the both are faster than my internet, so thats not a big deal. which would you recommend?? im looking at the linksys plk200 and the netgear hdkb101. unless you have a different one to sugest. thanks.
