Can't Setup VPN
Can't Setup VPN
Hey all,
i've recently setup my wireless internet consisting of D-Link DIR-655 and a expresscard DWA-643. I have updated the firmware on the router and updated the driver on the card.
Here is the current setup;
PC - XP SP1
router connected to the comp
Laptop - Dell with Vista
expresscard - dwa 643.
Internet is working fine on both computers and connected at 300mbps. What I want to do is create a VPN so that I can print from my laptop to the pritner connected on my PC. I've tried creating a VPN on my PC but after the restart there is still nothing in "my network". When i try connecting to the PC from my wireless is gives an error "is not setup to establish connection on port "pptp".
I don't think i've opened ports 1723 / 47 through the dlink managment, but not sure on how to do this..
So quite confused, can anyone help?
Thanks!

yep - firewall has also been disabled. From my vista laptop what procedure should I take to connect to the XP pc?YeOldeStonecat wrote:Have you setup the file and print sharing on the XP box? Shared out the printer? Made sure file and print sharing is set as an exception in any firewalls you may be running?
I've tried to setup a VPN to connect to the XP pc, I only enter the Domain name since there is no password /username.
Not only do you not need a VPN a VPN will never work to connect two computers on the same network. One of the requirements for VPN is that both computers belong to networks which use different IP ranges. So just drop the whole VPN thing, it is just never going to work and is making things way more complicated than needed.
Which computer is the printer physically connected to? Did you share the printer from that computer and allow everyone to access it? Have you tried browsing the network and double clicking on the computer with printer attached? Does the printer show up when clicking on the Printers and Faxes folder when browsing to the remote computer?

I see, the printer is physically connected to the XP desktop. I have also shared the printer, but when I can't seem to find it on my vista laptop. I cant even browse my XP computer from my vista laptop.ErikD wrote:Not only do you not need a VPN a VPN will never work to connect two computers on the same network. thanks for the reply eric;ErikD wrote:You shouldn't need LLTP.
Is simple file sharing setup on the XP machine? Do you have an account that has the same exact username and password setup on both machines?
I havn't setup a username / password on either machine as such but I have enabled file sharing (unless i've done it wrong). on the XP machine that has the router connected to I have done the network wizard. It seems i'm missing something quite obvious..
thanks for the reply eric - newb question; how would i set up a username / password on xp desktop and vista?ErikD wrote:If you didn't setup a username then you are using the default one. Try setting up a user on both machines with the exact same name, and use that. Sounds like you are just having problems with permissions.
Thanks
