I've found when working with that many users a dedicated box helps with the VPN performance. Currently, I'm running pfSense (a firewall solution based on FreeBSD) on a dedicated server that handles my firewall needs, VPN, and various other tasks.

pfSense supports IPSec, PPTP (both as a server or as ...

As a general rule, make sure the SSID is the same, the encryption is the same (exactly), and any other wireless parameters are the same on both devices.

Ok, in this situation, get the router, connect the cable from the AP to the router (instead the ICS machine), connect all of the other machines, and you should be good to go. You can also limit the bandwidth available to the torrent programs in most of the newer routers.

Well, I would employ the services of a qualified consultant for this type of endeavor. Especially because of the distance and the fact that there's no clear line of sight, it may be impossible. If it's not impossible, it will more than likely be difficult and probably very expensive to do.

Like I said in my first post--you have to know the basics about the various networking equipment available on the market. Once you know the difference between a Layer 2 and a Layer 3 switch, etc., you can take the circumstances you're faced with and apply your knowledge to those circumstances.

That's a large network you're talking about there. Without going into much detail, here's an outline of how I would move forward.

I would place Layer 2 switches that are VLAN-aware on each floor. With that many computers, you may have to stack a few switches on each floor.

Then I would configure a ...

You can definitely do this--just make sure you set the SSIDs the same so that your wireless card will "roam" without having to re-establish the signal. Also, set the channels at opposite ends of the spectrum (i.e. 1 and 11) to prevent crosstalk between the two points.

Before you go all out on a home run, trying plugging in the modem at the NIC and seeing if it holds sync well. If it does not, it's obviously a problem on Verizon's end and a home run will do little if nothing for this specific problem.

It has nothing to do with static IPs over dynamic IPs. That's like saying if you change your engine oil, your transmission will stop slipping.

I've had horrible experiences with Linksys PC cards. Some of them wouldn't hold a signal a few feet away from the point.
