Modem having hard time keeping connection?

Post by Joel »

So, I was chatting with Verizon's tech support over the internet and the lady said my modem was having to work very hard to keep the dsl connection. Now, this whole support thing was really annoying because she was going through the whole unplug all the wires crap etc...

What shall I do? Should I rewire my whole NID like dslnuts says to and run a dedicated line to the modem?

Not having a dedicated line to your DSL modem is a major problem for speed since it cause more line noise and interferince with the modem. It's best to have one line just for the DSL line striaght from the main incoming outlite to the DSL modem. It will mean you will most likely have to run a new line threw the house, but at least you will know that line is good, no problems, and no extra line rolled into a bundle some where in the wall or roof. You can ask the phone company to do this for you, but this will cost you a good days work most of the time and not worth takening the time off from work. So find a friend that is good with that type of stuff and ask him to do it with you and have a few beers and so on. Much easier with a friend to make it go by that much faster.

Before you go all out on a home run, trying plugging in the modem at the NIC and seeing if it holds sync well. If it does not, it's obviously a problem on Verizon's end and a home run will do little if nothing for this specific problem.

I think you meant to say NID, not NIC - the demarkation box.

There are three main problems that can cause you to sync out with DSL. Many others but these 3 are the major of problems.

One Bad connection from Main server to house.
Two Bad connection from Main panel in house to modem. ( Bad cables inside the house.
Three, DSL modem is just not working properly. (Normaly if this is the problem it will not connect to the service at all)

If a tech comes out and finds the problem to be within the house they will bill you(IE: phone line cable), unless it's the DSL modem that is damaged. Normaly they will test the phone line coming inside the house right from the main panel some place in your house. If the singal is strong enough then it's to do with the wiring inside the house.

I just want to let you guys know that I did a whole rewire of where my phone line comes in. I took the main line a split it in two directions. One goes straight to a filter and then everything in the house goes through that filter except the modem which is on the other split. My modem now connects twice as fast and I get exactly 1500.

Thanks for the replies!
