i'm in missouri, not washington, and i tried several times to get the phone company to believe there was a problem with the line, but they wouldn't, so they got the boot. and even if you do get good reliable uptimes most of the time, i think $40 a month for a crappy 180KB/s max line is a waste of ...

dsl is trash in my opinion, i first got dsl and was maxing out at 40KB/s, and the line quality was horrible, everytime it rained i would lose service, and the phone company refused to believe it was a problem with their line, so i ditched them and got @home, now i max out at 600KB/s

i doubt it, it looks like thats a request to get a netbios name table for your ip, and even if someone did spoof it they wouldn't be very smart because in order to get the info back to the person it needs their destination ip, which if spoofed won't ever reach them. it's probably some internal ...

it's completely fine if he sets up an ftp server to share files on his internal network, the traffic doesn't go through the isps network, so it doesn't involve them

just because netbios is loaded does not mean file sharing is on, windows by default enables netbios, and without filesharing its not a problem, and if you've updated your windows setup lately and use passwords on your shares it still isn't a problem

they're all the same more or less, you just pay an extra $50 when you buy a 3com for the name. of course everyone would rather buy a fancy 3com nic instead of a cheapie but it doesnt really matter, i'm using 2 smc ez nics in my network that were only $14 each and have had no problems with them at all

most linux distro's contain bind, the most popular dns daemon, should be in /usr/sbin/named i think, if not just do "locate named" and it's pretty much ready to work out of the box, unless you want to control domains, then i'd suggest brushing up on the man files or buying a big fat book

depending on what model you have, you can apply a special firmware upgrade to the dsl modem and turn it into a router, so you can unload all that pppoe bloatware off your system
