Welcome! Wired > wireless any day of the week. And with moca, powerline, and vdsl ethernet extenders, it's easier than ever to get wired ethernet where you need it.

Even when wireless works, it has two major flaws--a single collision domain (so it is using the old 10Mbit ethernet CSMA/CD method to ...

Sounds like it might not work very well in our house.
Since it's a 100+ year old house.

We also have a couple of ungrounded outlets...so I would guess the wiring is probably not very good. You might be surprised at how well they work. I've just used some in a house with 1965 wiring and some ...

Lately, the fastest downstream speed that my Actiontec C1000A modem runs at is 6592Kbps. Although I
have my modem sitting on a well ventilated corner of my desk, it runs pretty hot! The enclosure has 4 very

I ran into the exact same issue years ago and started with 2 internet connections eventually using 3. My solution? The rv-series multi-wan routers by Cisco/Linksys. I've seen this before when the duplex settings are wrong between both sides. The router may not be auto-configuring duplex properly. I'd set it manually on both sides and see if that solves the problem. :)

Philip's advice is solid. But I'd also look at your providers contract. If it says that they will install the modem in a room of your choosing, then the original installer didn't do their job and you should be able to get them to do it right.

Changing the DNS settings shouldn't make anything stop working unless they're doing something custom/funny with them.

But why do you want to change them in the first place? Let's start there and see if there's another way to accomplish what you want.

I've noticed this too, but it must just be the way the transformer has to work.

I've also successfully used non-switched US outlet splitters on 220v circuits. Just remember to make sure it's a good grade of wire and you're not doing anything crazy. Normal 'transformer' type electronics are fine. I ...

This can be easily determined by connecting a client via ethernet directly to the original modem/router. Yes, and looking at the Zyxel unit's specs, there's not going to be a way to replace it since it is the dsl modem as well. Checking the Zyxel with a wired connection is going to be the only way ...

There should not be a speed difference if yo use the TP-Link as a router, or as an access point. If anything, Access point mode should be easier on its hardware than doing the NAT router translation, so it should be a bit faster.

Keep in mind that you should only have one NAT router on your ...

Wow I wish I had speeds like that!

You would have to get a new router, but that can be a bit of a pain since you will need one that can do gigabit on the wan side reliably. My vote would be to just use their router and use your old one as just an access point.
