1000% (10x) improvement in speed thanks to TCP Optimizer!

1000% (10x) improvement in speed thanks to TCP Optimizer!

Post by ericp3371 »

Hi all, I'm so impressed and happy with this tool that I just had to share my results.

For years (since I setup my Debian Linux file and media server), I've been getting very slow transfer speeds. Even though my Vista PC is connected to my router over gigabit lan, and my server is connected to my router over gigabit lan, the fastest transfer rates I've been getting was around 9 MB/s (yes nine!), with a usual/average rate of 7-8 MB/s. Every once in a while I would search the net for suggestions, but to no avail. I finally came to the conclusion that this is just how it is, and therefore have been suffering with <10 MB/s transfer rates between my file server and my computer (gigabit lan), as well as my other devices (connected over 802.11n).

Yesterday a friend of mine told me about the TCP Optimizer tool. I therefore went ahead and downloaded it, but didn't expect much of a difference. I hoped for maybe a 10% increase, showing a transfer rate improvement of 1 or 2 extra MB/s. I thus ran the tool, selected "optimal settings", hit apply, and rebooted my computer. Once rebooted, I went into My Computer, opened the shared drive which connects to the samba share of the media partition on my file server. I did a copy/paste of a 800mb movie from my server to my desktop. To my absolute shock, my transfer rate was 70 MB/s !!! I can't believe it! My 800 MB movie transferred in about 10 seconds!!! (instead of the normal 2-3 minutes). For years, despite being connected over gigabit (and yes I did confirm that I was linked at 1000base-t all this time), I've been suffering transfer rates of 7-8 MB/s. Who knew all I had to do is run this simple little tool. I don't know what it did, but it sure made a difference!

My question is though, why would Vista be configured by default, in such a way as to create such a huge bottleneck (~90% restriction) with my lan interface? I have all the service packs and updates installed...

Anyway, that's my story. I hope someone else who has similar problems sees this post in a Google search, and thus comes across this tool.

Cheers,
Eric P.

Glad to hear it worked that well for you, thanks for sharing ! :)

By default, most OSes have TCP/IP settings to accomodate a great variety of internet connections. They are usually somewhat conservative and do not necessarily work best for high-speed networks. Even though they've improved/adapted to better utilize broadband over time, there is always some room for improvement and we try to look at all relevant settings and optimize them.

I must say, your 7-fold speed increase is not typical, but it is great to hear the Optimizer worked that well :)

This is quite odd. Are you sure your computer was negotiating at the correct duplex? I've seen this issue when the wrong duplex mode on the ethernet is selected/auto-configured.
