I would like a high level of control that is user friendly. We have 1 iPad that's Wi‑Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) and the rest of the wireless is used for Phone Data and TV. I would prefer to not go over $200 USD.

Right now I'd go with Asus RT-AC68U (RT-AC68R and RT-AC68W is the same).

It has 5GHz 802.11ac in addition to the 2.4GHz N radio, combined theoretical wireless speed is 1900 Mbps. It supports at least three different firmwares, including dd-wrt if you want to go that route at all. It has gigabit ports, USB3 for external storage, you can set a separate "guest" network, firewall, etc. Stock firmware is decent/easy, you'll just want to flash the newest one.

You can get it for ~$169 to $195 at Newegg.

The next top of the line model RT-AC87U costs $100 more and is a bit immature technology. Yea, it is 2400Mbps, has 4x4 MIMO, but it's a bit overpriced imho.

A similar 1900Mbps Netgear model for about the same price would be the R7000 (Nighthawk AC1900), haven't tinkered with one though.

How cow! At $200 you can start looking into business routers which can handle any household traffic all day long.
