Turn off auto-sense for the media type for both cards. They may be trying to negotiate a speed and are failing. Although im pretty sure you would still get a link if it was physically connected.

Just a thought.

Really interesting problem

Hi guys,

I have a problem I kinda doubt anyone will have an answer for, but i thought I'd give it a shot anyway.

Here's the deal. At work I have a number of Windows 98 machines, all of them are having the following problem. It is all related to DHCP, but please keep in mind for business/political ...

I dont know much about cable degrading (thats a new one to me) but as far as DSL goes the less stops, breaks, and outlets between your modem and your provider the better. SSH encrypted tunneling

If you REALLY dont want your ISP tracking you then get a shell account somewhere that uses OpenSSH. Then tunnel all your traffic over an encrypted link using an SSH client to your shell account. It will act like an encrypted proxy. The only connections in your ISP's logs will be over port 22 to the ...

You dont HAVE to run a firewall.

However Ive seen far too many people who think they know how to set up their machine get hacked cuz they didnt. Now maybe this is because I work in a university environment, where things tend to be a little bit worse as far as computer tomfoolery.

I recently went to my parents house and found that AT&T had blocked many ports/applications from working over their network. I know this may not be news to you all, but I havent been on a residential connection in 5 years. (University's OC-3 aint too shabby :) ) Now I understand they dont want ...

packet sniffing is the act of reading data packets straight off the wire. Some network cards can be set in promiscuous mode, then it can read any traffic on the wire, not just traffic meant for it. Someone sniffing in promiscuous mode can therefore see what you are downloading/viewing/chatting/etc ...

What kind of NICs are in your machines? I have seen some lower end cards do some crazy stuff with autonegotiating the ethernet speed and duplex level (duplexity?? :) doesnt sound right :) ). IIRC the BEFSR4.1 is not wireless, it has a 4 port switch. Unless the original poster just got the model number wrong, the post about WEP doesnt make much sense.

However to start diagnosing this, you have to make sure you are connected from the bottom up. Do you have link lights (the LEDs) on your ...
