thanks for that last post...it was very helpful. Does anyone happen to know how to get the download dialog to start appearing again. Mine is not appearing anymore, files are simply directly downloading to wherever they want, and does anyone know of a good free antivirus software?
AVG from http://www.grisoft.com is a good free anti virus.

Packet Sniffing
I was reading about this and they were talking about how vulnerable cable internet service is to this. What exactly could happen if someone was doing this to me?

packet sniffing is the act of reading data packets straight off the wire. Some network cards can be set in promiscuous mode, then it can read any traffic on the wire, not just traffic meant for it. Someone sniffing in promiscuous mode can therefore see what you are downloading/viewing/chatting/etc.
However dont get too paranoid yet. Im no cable guru (someone wanna back me up here) but most cable internet services do not function in the way you read about (at least not anymore). In other words the only traffic to get past your cable modem (and therefore be sniffable) is traffic destined for your machine. This means the same for anyone trying to sniff, so they cant see your traffic either.
As for the consequences of someone sucessfully sniffing? Anything you pass over the net that isnt encrypted can be read, put it that way. Its more a privacy issue, although if you like sending credit card/bank info in emails you could have more serious problems.
