ha HA!
got it to work!

something to add to the 'collective'... check the darn pins!
The bottom left pin of the IDE connection for my CURRENT harddrive was bent - not affecting its use, because it worked. HOWEVER - unbent pin - connected current drive - connected NEW drive (slave) - plugged in ...

OK, I think I've managed to follow this thread so far...

was the drive detected on it's own in the BIOS as a master, and if so, could you then try connecting the original hard drive as a slave?

I know some drives in the past used to refuse point blank to work as a slave to any other drive, but ...

The best advice I can really give you at this point is to get a copy of the manual (you should be able to downlowad it from the manufacturer's website) and run through the settings - just make sure you have written down all your details before you change anything

username, password vpi/vci settings ...

Unless there is an option in the router's web configuration pages that allows you to do it, then yes, I would say it is.

Does that actually clear your problem though?

If you are having problems connecting any more than one computer at a time is it possible you have put the modem/router into a ...

After a quick look at the site it states that it can work by individual IP addresses, so what I suggest you do is give each computer two IP addresses, one to connect to the internet and one to connect to local machines.

assuming you are doing the normal setup at present, i.e.

ip 192.168.0.x
sm 255 ...

Have you tried re-booting the modem yet?

It sounds as though you may be having problems with a learned MAC address table - something which can effectively stop ports on a switch working until the table is cleared.

Assuming that you maybe had your computer plugged into the switch with the other ...

I'd also plump for hardware/software rather than running a firewall on your own machine. I have used both IPCop ( http://www.ipcop.org ) and smoothwall ( http://www.smoothwall.org/ ) in the past, and to be honest I wouldn't trust any software solution that would run on an insecure OS (woo, a whole ...

I'm sure there was an issue with a certain build (or builds) of the Promise ATA controller, if this is the controller you are using you could try an older revision of the driver (25 methinks).

The problem was always more apparent when shutting down the computer, with a whiney noise then a click ...

For future reference, you could have installed Linux on the drive (completely kills windows partitions with the right options) and then removed the linux partitions (non-dos)...

But out of interest, how did you get round the problem?

Try visiting ASUS's website asus.com.tw iirc and downloading the manual for the motherboard.

once upon a time some said RTFM *teases*

but seriously, if you are trying to figure out which mobo to use for a certain task, and you need to know what the mobo is capable of - check out the manufacturers ...

I've never had a problem with my current setup, but APM/other powersaving stuff used to do all sorts of strange things on my older mobos.

Current Jetway V400 (old board blew up and I was too skint to get a decent board), older boards, ASUS A7V and A7V133, Gigabyte 5AX (at least that one is still ...

vcore is the core voltage of the cpu, you can usually up the voltage by 0.05V at a time.

don't just put it all the way up in one jump though; maximum stability using the lowest voltage you can get away with.

extra volts means hotter cpu!

Something I've never tried, but always fancied doing it was to delete the entire hardware section of the registry and then reinstall OS/drivers.

Anyone ever tried it?

Large MTU may cause problems, but try changing your connection settings to dial-up in your game(s) to see if this helps.

If you have an old pentium based computer lying around (I dare say most businesses, and half the folk that use this forum would) then how about trying a linux based firewall solution?

I use IPCop at home and know that it can do exactly this. I dare say others would also work.

IPCop is free, save ...

Just to point you in a slightly different direction, try having a look at http://www.ipcop.org/ for a software solution that will cater for all your needs.

IPCop is a software firewall based on linux, forked from the Smoothwall project.

I use it at home on my own network, including a web/game ...
