That's more like it

I was hoping to get that kind of answer. I'm going to use my Earthlink DSL line (1250down/327up @15,000') for IP telephony. I haven't ordered the equipment yet and my concern was I would have 1/2 or 3/4 second of latency (that would make it sound more like a cell phone). The company I plan on using ...

Just my 2 cents, but I would ping the dns server to see what type of delay I get. It sounds like his connection is fine. He might just want to find a faster server.

Lo latency DSL

A few weeks ago I was helping a relative find a DSL provider in their area (Chicago N. burbs). I found an ISP which offered a special "gamers DSL" which promised extra short latency (shorter than their standard ADSL. Now I can't remember who they are, has anyone heard of such a DSL? I realize this isn't the case with you but I have seen "Load coils" drag bandwidth down as low as 70kbps. One of my tech buddies at work found a load coil on his circuit, his speed had been as low as 125kbps, I think he was able to get it up to about 500kbps after that. Remember, I'm talking LOAD ...

If anyone has a list of DNS servers could they list them? I know mine but not any others. I'd like to have a few to run tests or to use as alternates when mine is down. Thanks.

When your service provider is refering to different circuit they may mean different "Pair". The phone company tech can look at your pair then check it for noise and then start looking for a pair with less noise. According too our standards 0-20db is acceptable, 20-30 is marginal and 30 db and up is ...

Here's one of the few places you actually have "control over" (sort of, more later on this). It's called the "drop". It's the link between your house and the phone companies network.

Types of drops:

AERIAL: Suspended in the air between the house and the phone line, terminal or pole.
Issues:

I work for Southern Bell, there was a customer who's line we knocked out in the course of upgrading his drop (the line between the house and the network). Both before and after replacing this line the guy had a connection of 73kbps. I ran a test with my meter and found he still had coils ...

Make sure your coax is grounded properly. If it isn't the coax sheilding acts like an antenna and add noise. This cannot be over stated.

Recently we have been instructed to use "tight twist" wire for jumpers at cross connect boxes if the line is to be used for DSL. At a glance the wire looks like CAT3. LOL, that's a good idea insisting that they take your order. Not have enough good pairs let alone spare pairs is a battle I fight day in and day out. You would be shocked to know that many if not most of the underground lines in my area were laid in the 1920's. I am told that the fact that the ...

It's just that time and time again I see houses which have the original drop (the line which runs from the house to the terminal), the wire is classified as cat 1 which is unshielded and has no twist to block EMI or RF. As often as not this drop wire is the same age as the house, even if the house ...

I measured the noise on my line and found a total of almost 30Db of noise. I found that any phone which had power going to it (usually in the form of a 120V to 9V adapter) added about 5Db. Advice on setting up Earthlink ADSL w/Linksys Router

My Telocity/DirectTV SDSL will be no more as of 9/10/2000. I'm in the midst of setting up my Linksys 4 port router to work with PPPoE on my new Earthlink ADSL line. My firmware revision is 1.30. Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom?

Thanks in advance. :D

If your current setup works fine write down your current TCP/IP settings then Re-install 98SE OVER your current operating system. This should put your registry back to where it was at before you started tweaking. :-)

Needless to say if people have problems they will complain (there's nothing wrong with this) but I wonder how many people are perfectly happy with their various providers. I'd love to see how the ratio of people who aren't having problems stack up to people who are having trouble?
