Lo latency ISP
Lo latency ISP
A few weeks ago I was helping a relative find a DSL provider in their area (Chicago N. burbs). I found an ISP which offered a special "gamers DSL" which promised extra short latency (shorter than their standard ADSL. Now I can't remember who they are, has anyone heard of such a DSL? Mind you I'm not talking about bandwidth.

I know what u mean... latency not bandwidth..
I have never heard of such thing.. marketing perhaps? to target ignorant gamers?
I mean physical distance to the CO can't change.. no matter how many strong repeaters they put in there... I doubt they'll give this particular "gamer" priority or extra line quality...
So to me this sounds like bogus marketing stuff that knows alot of gamers love low latency and such... that's what I think...

No, but they could route differently to eliminate hops and hence reduce ping times.
They could... but think about it... will they re route the thing differently? it'll be a lot .. alot of hassel for such thing for a few customers.. dont u think? it's not like it's a button.. make this connection for this person faster... so Idon't know... *shrugs*

I have heard of low latency ISP's who take pride in their quality bandwidth. The ISP I used in the dial up days took pride in that. They've gone through several buyouts and mergers, still use them for their DSL and it is well above the quality of the local phone company's DSL.
Another DSL provider we've been hoping to resell is DSL.NET....which is expanding fairly quick across the nation.

There's nothing bogus about it...better equipment, not overselling, a more direct gateway on a fatter and better quality backbone to the internet.
Take several ISP's, and run traceroutes to the same IP. The low quality ISP's will give you hops in the mid 20's....the better ISP's will give you barely over a dozen hops.

I was hoping to get that kind of answer. I'm going to use my Earthlink DSL line 1250down/327up for IP telephony. I haven't ordered the equipment yet and my concern was I would have 1/2 or 3/4 second of latency. The company I plan on using is Vonage. The are offering a free Cisco telephony adapter and unlimited U.S. domestic calls for $39.00/month.

Was it Speakeasy DSL? I remember seeing a banner about a 'gamers dsl' from speakeasy.

If you have Cablevision OOL, check your upload cause they are now capping to 150000bps you if you go over some secret amount which they will not publish. ...
