Google kills Project Ara

Google has officially discontinued Project Ara, it's modular smartphone concept.

The company announced its idea of a phone with interchangeable parts as a game-changer back in 2013. Ara would have allowed users to upgrade and swap components, by means of exchanging the particular parts which seemed as though they would snap in place.

Ara came with its own trials and tribulations, as well. The initial unveiling was delayed, as well as some of the phones features ending up being too difficult to produce, and being cut from the project.

Axing Project Ara is one of the first steps in a campaign to unify Google's various hardware efforts, which range from Chromebook laptops to Nexus phones. Former Motorola president Rick Osterloh rejoined Google earlier this year to oversee the effort. Google sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo Group in 2014.
