Which is better?
i'm thinking of building a new system. The one i'm using right now isn't mine.
I'm generally trying to decide on what processor to use?
Which do you guys prefer, an AMD-based system or an Intel-based one?

well, i was curious coz P4's are a bit expensive and it seems to me like P4's have to go with RDRAM's (expensive also) to really get the most out of it..
been reading up on some articles also in http://www.tomshardware.com and it seems like AMD's are better, P4's notwithstanding..
frankly, i don't think i can scrape up enough to have a P4..any suggestions other than a P4?

That RDRAM myth is BS. FYI, Toms Hardware Reviews are paid off.
You Asked. The price isn't that much different. Well worth it.

Hey Parse27,
If you really wanna save money and want some really top kickass performance, go AMD.
Look at my sig, I've got an XP1600+ For $51 @ newegg and i got it unlocked and overclocked @ 1.9 Ghz ! and this baby flies!
Make no mistake, when you go AMD, you're playing with the Big Dawgz !!
Take that Intel !

There both great and right now the pentium has the amds in megahurtz but thats not everthing. I just bought a new xp 2200 and epox mobo and still have to get some memory but if i were to make a system now and had the money i would get the p4 2.8 hate to say it but for now its the leader but when the amd kicks back up and starts kicking ass then ill be with amd i do not currently have a p4 system but if i upgrade soon i will get the new p4 until amd starts kicking back up.

My dad is a bigtime AMD fanatic, I on the other hand like Mac, and intel. I could never get used to AMD. I am building a P4 machine this weekend.. it oughta be interesting. Abit IT7 Max, P4 2.0AGhz CPU, Volcano 7+ Heatsink/fan, Corsair Pc2700 512MB platinum - silver heatsink, Thermaltake Ram Cooler, 160GB of HD space among 6 Channels 4 raid 2 IDE, Firewire networked with My other computers.. OH yeah, Smokin'

We have fanboys in all directions (
The Intel P4 is quite easily o/cable. I have put together a couple of 1.8a that clocked to 2.4 with little effort. You do not need RDRAM for the P4, DDR ram is a fine option with a modest performance hit for a big savings in price.
In Ice Cube's thread regarding the assembly of an inexpensive machine YardofStuff had a great combo (I editted it to include a AMD 1600+). An affordable box with a good kick.

blessed be................
AMD, but thats personal cuz Pentium just screamz conform BUT!!, that is purely political and this is about the performance to cost ratio and i am out of my realm on that issue...have had blinders on for my UBER and havnt looked at anything else. so, with that ill stop babling and move on.
lol

Every normal man must be tempted at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
I often wonder if the voices in my head ever get frustrated because I'm just too damn lazy to climb that clock tower.

Parse, I'll throw my 2 cents in if you don't mind.
For the most bang for you bucks go AMD.
There is alot more to it but here is an idea.
$160 - Pentium 4 2.0GHz Sock 478
$94 - Athlon XP 2000
$162 - RDRAM 512MB
$93 PC2100 DDR 512MB
I wouldn't buy either one of the momery sticks above but an ide what I would buy: 512MB $126.89 Crucial CT6464Z265 DDR PC2100
Memory doesn't make that much difference between DDR and RD
Most Intel boards are using DDR.

I buy Intel, and ASUS exclusively. Always have, always will, unless, or until one day either of them start making junk.Originally posted by Hybridmonolith

Don't take my preferrences as a slam on AMD or Abit/MSI. That's not what I'm saying. I just preferr to keep using what has always worked well for me.
