Connection problems Even without router

Post by deleted_acct »

OK my connection was being dropped which i want having problems with until i started using my router well i tried it with the cable modem plugged straight into my pc and it still dropped the connection. All the lights stay the same on the cable modem but the internet doesnt work i cant visit sites no internet programs work nothing. Whats the problem? Its got to be my pc if the lights on the cable modem stay fine then theres got to be a config problem.

Hi Chillinhh,

Have you re-configured the TCP/IP for your NIC in Network settings??

Set it up static.....

C:\>ipconfig /renew

and this came up

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

The following error occurred when renewing adapter Local Area Connection: DHCP S
erver unreachable

So i had to reset my cable modem. I wonder what the problem is im calling isp.

could be your modem. I had a simular problem with my 3com 812 and the ISP tech didn't know from squat - but he did suggest I check the 3com site and see if my bio were up to date. Went there and downloaded new bios - bam - solid as a rock. The key in my problem was it would fail about every hour - just when my lease ran out on the changing address. Modem couldn't renew for some reason. Beyond me - it has worked fine for about a year then failed about every hour. Well, bottom line is the new bios fix the problem.

Well, you are sure right about it not being your modem if it is only a week old. They don't even make the one I have anymore. :p

Do you think that the tweaks could be causing the connection drop?Someone told me since i tweaked my connection that could be causing the connection drops. Also my connection didnt drop until i got a router so i thought it was my router well i plugged my
cablemodem directly into my pc and it still drops.

Whomever told you that it was the tweaks you did doesn't know what they are talking about. If you are losing your connection then there is a 99% chance you have a line problem, it could be a filter, connection, splitter etc. and you need to call your ISP to have them send someone out to find and fix the problem.

:) :D

Well there like well if the online light has not gone off then its not our problem hes like its something between the cable modem and pc i said well its a brand new modem and ive tried it on other pcs and with other cables. But i remembered something when i had my old modem i only remember the connection dropping with the router although i dont remember plugging the modem straight in i dont remember it dropping except the router so i told them how about they enable my old modem again for test reaasons so ill see if its the modem and the guys like well call another time between 8 and 12 when theres more people here because im only one with a bunch of other calls waiting it would take me a long time to get the other modem out of the way and the old one back up. Uhhh what a wasted hour on the freakin phone. What do yall think? It has to be the modem if its not the pc not the cat5 not cox thats the only thing left.

Don't rely on Cox's phone support, they are the biggest bunch of morons you will ever deal with. I can give you story after story after story about them, just tell them you are losing your signal randomly and you want a tech to come out and check your line.

There are a few things you can do first:

1. Make sure ALL your connections are good, coax and CAT5.

2. Make sure your line is split right where it comes into your house only once, one side going to your cable modem and the other to the rest of your house for tv. Make sure the splitter is a good quality splitter and that is good.

3. Eliminate ALL other possibilities such as bypassing the router, NIC, cables etc.

4. If you are using a surge protector (and you should be) try bypassing it.

:D

Thanks For the advice ill try some more of those things until i get a chance to call cox back. Thanks,
You get a Golden Star :D
Even if it doesnt fix the problem i aprreciate the effort. But thats a good idea about surge protector and also i need to check the line outside. SO your saying the line should be split one going to my cable modem and the other to rest of house? I really need new lines put down but hadnt got the chance because cox said the lines in my house arent made for cox hsi like it will work but will not handle top performance but cox will not put in cable through the house we got to get up with carpentor or something. That would help some i bet. Also what should my signals be? I can check them when i go to 192.168.100.1 which gets me into my cable modem.
