Terribly slow cable connection!

Post by BuLLets718 »

Hey guys I'm new to the forums. I really want to know why my connection is terribly slow for the majority of the day. After testing my connection at internetfrog.com im only downloading at 500 kbps and it takes me 10 seconds to download a 1 mb file. this is terrible because i have a roadrunner turbo connection (the best connection basically). I live in Queens, New York. I need help asap please!!! Also i'm using a vista 64bit computer connected through wired ethernet.

Welcome to the forums.

For speed testing, try speedtest.net (or speedguide.net/speedtest)

What is the "Road Runner Turbo" maximum speed supposed to be ?
What modem do you use, does it have a web interface for statistics / signal levels ?

Can you post an Analyzer result ?

Does a traceroute show any packet loss ?

Hey, thanks for the response. I'm not quite sure what the maxium speed is supposed to be, i read something about it having speeds of up to 22 mbits download speed. I use a RCA cable modem how can i check if it has web interface for statistics / signal levels?

These are my results:

What do you mean by electrical devices?

It is placed ontop of the desk my flatscreen is placed on. The nearest electrical devices my speakers which are like 1 1/2 feet away and my pc tower which is below it about a foot away.

And if you count keyboards and mouses, they are about a foot away.

Make sure you have no pinched cables
Make sure your NIC (Network Interface Card) drivers are up to date. and that you have your Service pack up to date.
Clean out your temporary internet files.
and possibly turn off your your modem for awhile to allow it to update.

Most electrical interferance is with DSL modems and items that give out allot of RF interferance but for the most part that problem hasnt been seen for awhile. or not as bad
things that use to effect it is Halogen lamps and some radio output along with older noisy Florescent lamps.
However our house has electrical interference set on purpose and no one can even use a cell phone properly here.. Drives my neighbors nuts...
I also broadcast a fake SIDD set to secure_your_network_fools

Hope that fixes it..
You can also find out if you have the right DNS servers on your connection

Thats all from me for awhile. One post every few years should be good for awhile

Pinched cables as in tangled up? I don't understand.

Also, I have a cable modem, not dsl. how can i check if my NIC card is updated? It is not my temporar files i run ccleaner everyday and my connection is still below average.

Turn off your modem for 10 mins, then try relocating your modem as far as possible from them. After that, post your new tracert yahoo.com

Power off the modem and place it on the floor below your comp table. Make sure you do not coil up any signal or power cables.

Hmm, guys I think I found out the problem.

It seems everyday at night my connectoin goes terribly slow, and the download speed is terrible, dial up would probably be better. (I'm talking 3 kb/s-25 kb/s download speed.

There is no solution that i know of, that can fix this, as I type, the connection is fine, but once the clock hits 7:00, boom, all goes bad (200+ ping in games).

This makes me terribly mad because even though I know that connections get slower at night, it really shouldn't affect my gaming expereince or my online surfing to the point that it is near impossible, which it is.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH, what to do what to do?!?!

The tracert shows bad signals between your comp and the modem in hop 1. Thus, the problem is not bad traffic in your ISP's network.

If this is time related, it could be some heavy electrical equipment in your home that is turned on in the evening causing the problem. What is on the other side of the wall where your computer is?

Suggest you replace the connection cable between your comp and the modem and see if ping times at hop 1 is still with '*'.

To Trogers: I have a roadrunner technician coming to check it out in an hour. I will be sure to mention that if problems keep occurring.

And to 100 010 00, It is wired.
I already mentioned that in the original post.

Grrr...The technician is gonna come over tomorrow instead. Stupid Time Warner cable, always problems.
