Just curious how much higher this beast is going to go! I ruined my p4 2.4c because it stuck to the hsf and deficated over 20 pins when I pulled it off. It also left my motherboard non-functional.
So, I picked up a p4 3.0c and had a gigabyte 8IG1000Pro-G laying around. I'm using 6 80mm case fans and the retail HSF. I'm also still using the standard apoxy on the retail HSF.
I'm currently running at 3.7ghz and the tempature is still running under 40C!
I'd like to see what my 2.8 will go to..however I don't think its possible to OC a Dell even though I just replaced the 2.0 I had in it with a 2.8 P4.
I'd like to at least push it to a 3.0 or maybe higher if it was possible.

Ive had my memory up to 1:1 ratio running @ 220mhz safely

my 2.4 was stuck at 3.0 too. It would run at 3.1, but there were some ocassional problems at the higher speed.

How fast do you think she'll go? This is crazy.
If the temp is still under 40C i think you have a lot more room, you might be able to hit 3.8-3.9. What is you Vcore at?
doesn't oc-ing the processor, somehow inhibit the performance of the rest of the system? Or is this a guy thing, like blowing up stuff, that I wouldn't understand?

Hello WickedWendy, and "Welcome to Speedguide"
Yeah, call it a guy thing. Always want to "tweak" stuff, get more power, etc. If done properly, it's usually quite safe, and usually don't damage your system, and the results are usually increased performance throughout the system. Of course there are those who must take it to the limits, and beyond...and they end up "cooking" their hardware quite often. But when done within reason, it's nice and safe.

sometimes you can get a 200 dollar cpu to perform like the 500-800 dollar cpus, plus you end up with a higher bus speed from the overclock, a very big plus.
ok thx Yards , for a minute I was about to suggest that men often instead of being comfortable with what hardware they have, will often try to try their best to make it appear more powerful or have better performance, in many types of scenarios!

You don't have to spend the money for a faster CPU or system that can handle it...most of the homebuilt systems we build can already handle overclocking "out of the box".
2x examples...
1) Purchase the latest and fastest CPU that you can...and overclock it some more!
2) Say you'd like to stay on a budget. If you purchase a CPU that is one or two speeds behind the latest and greatest....you can often save a whole buncha money. Plus....you can usually overclock your CPU beyond what the latest and fastest CPU out on the market is. So it's a "Win-win" situation!
Scenario...when I purchased and built my current 1 1/2 hours ago, the CPU is a Pentium 4 2.6C. At that time, the 3.0 was just hitting the market...and was VERY expensive. My 2.6 was very inexpensive, because it was 2x speeds below the latest. "Best bang for the buck". I immediately overclocked it to 3.12 for quite some time. Which back then.....was faster than the fastest speed Intel had out. A few months later since she proved to be running stable, I overclocked it some more to 3.38...and it's been running that speed since then. Except for one lockup I had a month or so ago, when I loaded some ATI control panel for my graphics....I had a little glitch, I lowed back to 3.12 just to test for a bit...but found it out was something else, so I'm back up to 3.38. Still darned fast for a 1.5 year old system.

It does save money. I recently aquired a 2400+ XPM for my parents and with a little 'safe' overclocking it's at 3200+ speeds. That's a $170 processor fore $77.
well, the 3.7 speed appears to be unstable for unknown reasons.
I've had 2 lockups in the past 48 hours, although I'm not sure it's the processor. The monitor doesnt power down, it just goes black. It doesn't do this when I push it through testing, it just happens while I'm away from the computer.
So, it's running at 3.6 to be safe for now till I figure out what happened. My first guess is that my motherboard is misrepresenting the temp's i'm running at.
