The point I'm at now:

WIRELESS:
pc can "see" laptop and transfer files.
laptop can't "see" pc or transfer files.

WIRED:
both pc and laptop "see" each other and transfer files.

HELP!!!!

I'm such a newbie!!

Alls up and running now, the answer:

Open Network Connections, highlight the connection (either wireless or nic) then click "Advanced" (at the top of the window) and choose "Optional Networking Components" wait for the wizard to load and then put a tick in the "Other Network File and Printer ...

Yes, on setup I kept the default "MSHOME" workgroup which up untill I added the laptop worked perfectly and infact still does between the two wired pc's.
I've just done another "search for computer" and found when I look for pc1 or pc2 I get two search results for each and irrispective of which ...

OK now I'm vexed.
Tried both suggestions (that sockxpfix prog's pretty good, does all the work for you) didn't solve the problem though.
Just a thought, when I set up my system I only had the laptop connected via wireless, would it make any difference if I had it wired as well?

I've now enabled netbios over TCP/IP, still no joy.

I CAN ping by name and ip the other pc's but CAN'T find any pc by name or ip when I "search for computer".

The SSID is unique - it was the first thing that I DID think of.

Done that, still no joy. when I click on "view workgroup computers" I get the message: Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

I've recently purchased a new laptop and am trying to enable file and printer shareing.
I allready have 2 pc's connected via cable on a wireless router, both can "see" each other and exchange files and use the printer.

First of all, sorrey for the time in replying, I've been away working, anyway, problem solved, the guy bought a wireless router as he now wants to use a laptop as well so unplugged the switch, set up the router and all problems faded away. Must have been the DHCP......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, went into services and dissabled the XP Firewall, but still keeps comming back after reboot. Both PC's are on the same workgroup (Home), but as far as I'm aware it shouldn't matter if they are on different workgroups as all you would get is an extended tree in "My Network Places".

Yep, says firewalled, (with file and printer enabled) even after turning it off and rebooting, even found an article on NetBEUI and how to set it up (bindings and all) followed that and still nothing. Neither PC will show the other in my network places, and nothing comes up in view workgroup ...

I uninstalled all anti spyware, adware and virus software before setting up the network. Also I disabled the XP Firewall, which incidently keeps turning back on for some reason. Still no joy.

Could there possibly be something else?

I'm trying to set up a simple 2 PC and switch (no internet) network but I'm not having much success.

I've followd the guide found on EZLAN.NET but still cannot share files and neither pc "sees" the other in "MY Network Places".

I was wondering, does anyone know how I can capture streaming video while its playing in say windows media player?

Dear JackMDS,

Thanks for your pointer, I've already set my network to use NetBEUI, only needed to know if it would work over wireless.

Thought I'd stick to Linksys as most reviews I've read rate the available gear if not top very close to it.

Yup, it's handy for that. I just got done remoting into someones computer with it to fix a networked printer issue, using UltraVNC. Sure beats driving over there, eh?

Just think how envirnmentaly friendly it is, saving all that petrol and exhaust fumes, stress from driving on over crowded roads ...

Out of curiosity, why didn't you just use the chat that comes with all versions of Windows (all computers, for that matter). It's called Messenger (not related to Microsoft Messenger) in XP.
