Try going here for a little more detail

Go to here http://www.broadbandreports.com/ and click on "forums" on the left side. Scroll down to Telco Support and pick which region you are in. Mods from SBC are at work posting solutions to problems such as this all the time...and sometimes I even agree! Make SURE that your read the top threads ...

Where is he seeing this oxidation? All your telephone wires should be sealed into connectors or Scotchlock patches. He shouldn't be seeing any "green" cable at all. If he does, he's getting a high moisture content on the line. It most certainly will affect your noise floor and prevent you from ...

Looks like your speed problem is more to do with your computer settings than the actual dsl connection. I can't imagine us allowing a speed that low...if you had over twice that with the msn dsl, than it has to be within your computer. The msn dsl and the SBC Yahoo dsl are both going out on the same ...

Here's your answer...

If you want the best response from your dsl, you have to filter out every line that has a phone connection(I recommend even on unused outlets as they are a portal for interference). Most if not all phones are cheaply made and the connections aren't protected from outside signal sources. The filter ...

Save even MORE money

Being that I'm a central office tech for SBC, I'd have to be biased and say go with it. I'm not even going to argue against the cable, I don't want that fight here. The one thing that you may be forgetting however...once the one year service agreement is up, you can always sign up for a year again ...

You can check those lines for SEVERE water damage by giving them a little wiggle back and forth and bending(not kinking). Put your ear up to it...if you hear a mild crackling sound-kind of like running your fingernails across your jeans-then it's corroded bad. As far as being charged for that mess ...

Well...there can be a ton of legal problems resulting from what you're planning to do. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with NY law. But I would lay odd's that you really shouldn't touch the network box for your phone line. The phone line typically is OWNED by the telco company all the way up to the ...

Couple of visual problems...

By looking at the pictures, here's the trouble I see right of the bat.
1) No n.i.d.-network interface device...that would be a grey weather sealed box to protect your spliiter and connectors from rain, ice, snow, etc.
2) Bad grounding. Some folks will tell you that connecting a ground wire to a ...

When you say there's a "cable line" about a block from your house...do you mean that your neighbor has the service or that the main cable line runs by you? Just because it runs by you does not mean that you can be serviced by it. The other question I would have is- do you live in an unincorporated ...

Help

You're right about the filter. If it's frying after a few weeks or so, it's most likely collecting moisture from the outisde environment. Try to make it one straight run from the demarc to the house. Bring the line inside and put your split there where it's weather protected. Most dsl filters are ...

The phone company itself doesn't do anything inside the central office. Your bandwidth has to be changed via provisioning from a remote programmer. You should have been given a date that this would be done by, it usually takes about a week at most. A lot of companies got backed up to two weeks due ...

For Erwin

Keep your modem hooked up to the "tap" side of the dc coupler...let the "out" side of the dc go to the tv's. Don't substitute the splitter for the coupler. There's plenty of signal going to the modem if the couper is the first thing in line. Save the db power for the tv's.

For Erwin

Indy is right. You do have a directional coupler that you're looking at. It's almost the same thing as a two-way splitter. There are different values for couplers though. They can go up to twenty db loss or more, but the "out" leg always loses about 1db. Regal is a fine brand for splitters and ...

REGARDING: YeOldeStonecat's reply...

He's pretty much right on about everything he said, the only issue I would take up is the distance from the central office line. It's partly true, if you are fed off of copper straight from the c.o. But there are many fiber systems that go out to remote terminals that act as "mini" c.o.'s. There is ...

Don't use neighbor's number...

Don't use a neighbor's phone number, they may be fed off a completely different cable, litespan, or cev. BUT, if the house you are looking at is between two houses(in the middle of a street for instance, not a corner house), then that would work. By putting in the neighbors' numbers at SBC.com, you ...

Here's your answers...

1)Yes, it is completely legal for them to deny you access. But it's not "them" that is denying you. It is the owner of your apartment building. Most all apartment buildings(mdu's) sign exclusive contracts with cable companies. They get a sweet deal, the cable company prewires all the units for free ...
