I tried searching the forum, but couldnt find what i was looking for. Anyway does someone know of an article to modify a computer power supply to be used as a 12v dc power source outside of the computer? I know it already puts out 12v but how do i get the ps to turn on? thanks

i currently use a b router (wireless) and a b notebook card and have the router in the basement. even when i am 3 floors up in my house, i have no problems with the b receiving or transmitting up to 100 feet away. i am using the linksys b network kit avail now for 80 bucks.

ok i hook the switch to the ethernet output of my dsl modem and then hook in 3 computers to the switch. each computer accesses the internet fine and i can access the internet and surf with all 3 at the same time with no probs, so why do i need the router?

ok i understand the thing with the ip address, but when i go to the properties, every computer has the same ip and accesses the internet fine. the computers share the internet with no problem and i dont see any speed difference. i can also hook 2 computers into the modem and see no difference. so ...

ok so this doesnt make sense to me. i bought a router and a switch so i can share internet throughout my house, but if i hook up all 3 of my computers to the switch i bought, they all still access the internet fine. so the question is why do i need a router? why not just use the switches?

why are you messing with fiber, it doesnt move data any faster then plain old wire, it does however have the ability to carry more data at any given time. example:
if you have a 1 inch diameter pipe at 1 psi it will move x amount of water. a pipe of 10 inches diameter at 1 psi will move more water ...

and is there a website that gives you ideas on building a network, i.e.
you need 1 router
1 switch
1 hub
etc.etc.etc. for your setup to work?

ok i figured it out, i had my on board lan/ethernet connection set to 1/4 duplex in the bios. i reset it to full duplex and get an average speed of 605 now. thanks anyway.

ok here are the results. i removed kazaa from my computer and plugged the modem directly into the wall and now have an average sped of 373. a little better!

also verizon said i should use dhcp instead of ppoe, what the hell is this? aslo they said that if i only half one nic card than i should use 100 full speed , but if i have 2 cards i should use 100 1/2 speed. they also suggested i reinstall windows, but this seems extreme, because i had a cable ...

well i put them back , ran your tests and came up with an average down speed of 246. I called verizon and they said i should be getting around 5-600 hundred avearage. they are gonna send a tech out to "adjust" the line? what ever.

im not arguing with you here, im just saying the settings in which you just gave me caused my connection speed to come to a crawl. when i reloaded the prior settings the speed came back. i dont know why, it just did. do you have any idea why?

yea i went ahead and ran a dedicated cat5-e line from the box to the modem directly. I think it made a huge difference in the speed. it only cost me 30 bucks so it was definately worth it.

are you using usb or a ethernet connection?
if you are using an ethernet connection, make sure you are using the proper cable. you need a straight through cable, not a crossover cable.
next after connecting to the computer remove the power wire from your modem and let it sit for like 5 sec ...
