Can it work?

Post by ruger-dfw »

I have a Linksys BEFSX41 router & SMC SMC7004ABR - Barricade™ 4-Port 10/100Mbps Broadband Router with the printer share.

Can I hook the SMC to the Linksys, so I can have the printer.

Sence the Linksys does not have the Printer contection I was hope to hook the SMC to the Linksys. Thanks for any INFO.

I'm sure we probably could make it work. Several things to think about.

#1...you cannot have two computers of the same IP address on the same network. Linksys ships with a 192.168.1.XXX IP scope, the router itself taking the standard gateway address of .1. SMC routers, I forget what IP scheme they use, but it's probably the same scope...if not, you'll have to change it to the same scope as the Linksys...or visa versa (doesn't matter which way)...but since it's also a gateway, it will default to .1...and you'll have to change that, since the Linksys will be .1...so make the SMC .2 (192.168.1.2)

#2...you cannot have two DHCP servers on the same network....so disable the DHCP service on the SMC.

That should do it....you're pretty much just using the SMC as a TCP networked print server now. You will not be using the WAN port, just the uplink of one router to a standard port of the other router to connect them.

Right now I cannot think of anything else that would need to be done.
