Bainbridge is a far fringe suburb and puts you about 40 minutes east of Cleveland proper. It's a nice country area that is starting to build up.

I live in Medina, which is about the same distance SW of Cleveland, and very similar. I work downtown and own a local ISP.

You are close to Aurora and ...

Never seen a rackmount cable modem, but I'd bet someone makes them if you look hard enough. No doubt they cost more than $50, though.

Rackmount router? You'd need an ethernet to ethernet unit, like a Cisco 2611 or 2511 or similar model. There are others, not sure what you are prepared to work with ...

ICS is not efficient in the way it handles CPU or LAN operations.

An inexpensive switch would help. A good broadband router would also be a very good idea, it would improve speed and security.

It's also entirely possible that this will give your cable co. complete control of how many PC's you can operate on your LAN. Most would not care for that. Given the track record of most cable co's for trying to squeeze their users for more $$$ for multiple PC's, it very well could happen...

As for learning Linux, the only real way to learn it is by using it. My first suggestion is to see if there's a Linux user's group in your area and to join in. Many even have regular install fests, where you can take in a system, install Linux and debug it with a group of knowledgeable enthusiasts ...

It is my understanding that there is a least one local Wireless ISP operating in that area. That may be a good option for you.

Newegg is good most of the time. We've bought a lot from them at the office, had very few problems. They did mess up one order and return, took a couple of weeks to work out, we had to get nasty about it to get results.

FIrst, I'd suggest you not use ICS if you don't have to. It's slow and it increases security concerns. You also must leave the computer on at all times to use it.

Second, if you use a hardware solution, you need a router to do the sharing. That's faster and it also provides the best security ...

Half or full duplex and 100 vs 10 mb/s should not matter, as long as both ends of the ethernet connection are setup the same. Few, if any, Cable or DSL modems will come close to the maximum speeds of any form of ethernet.

If you aren't sure what the ADSL modem supports, start with Half Duplex 10mb ...

MRTG is the classic solution. It runs on unix or linux and uses SNMP to get packet counts from your router or modem. Not easy for the neophyte, but it's very good, flexible and free.

I've heard of MRTG in a windows environment but never seen it.

You got it right, installing a conduit is the key. That allows you to install any form of cable, or replace a bad cable. For 500' I'd suggest 1" PVC with carefully installed watertight couplings. If you are paraniod, but a splice box in the center of the run.

Buy some surplus multimode fiber off ...

For a generic and robust PPPoE driver for MS Windows systems, RASPPPoE is still the best choice. It's also free. Few telcos or DSL providers will provide technical support for it, but most know what it is and respect it. It's really not hard to setup if you know your PPPoE login and password.

The default for residential ADSL is a single dynamic IP address. To share the connection with more that one computer, you'll need to add a router or a router/hub combination, to your LAN/ethernet.

You do not need Enternet, a PPPoE driver/client, with Windows XP. Windows XP has its own built in PPPoE driver that works very well.

IMO, they should configure Enternet to refuse to install into XP. It just causes problems.

Yes, you may use a single central microfilter. Just be sure the pair feeding the ADSL modem is "in front of" the filter and all the phone are fed from "behind" the filter.
