upgrading cat5/5e patch panels is completely useless. Unless you are also going to upgrade the cables in the wall.

You are talking about a huge expenditure for no benefit.

What do you expect to get from cat6?

Sure if i had to run new wires, i would run cat6, but other then that i would stick with ...

As for the guy with a T-3 (DS3) .. those run in the 4-5k a month range.

I would say a OC192 would run 100k a month max.

i setup vlans on my client networks so desktops/laptops can not talk to each other .. but can talk to the server vlan.

This prevents one desktop from getting a virus, and infecting other desktops ... it also stops rogue dhcp servers from being setup.

Well, you have advantaged to both.

PTP direct connection from your office to the factory. No data goes over the internet ... secure to a point. You really only need to secure it more if it's that important.

DIA - the factory get's it's own internet connection and from there you add a vpn back to ...

If he ran in to complications, he did not set it up correctly.

you can rename your domain just fine in a 2003 native mode domain.

Either way, there is no reason to change to or from .local.

But yes, he may have done something stupid like deleting his zone file.

99% of the time this is caused by somone having public dns in their tcp-ip config.

Note, there is nothing wrong with having your domain being a .com or .net

If you put your server on the internet like this you will get a virus eventually.

No one makes AD public like this.

That is a bad idea on so many levels.

If you need to support remote offices do it with site to site ...

Does each network have it's own internet conenction?

Are both networks local?

If yes

Then just hook up the two networks, makea ACL that blocks access between them for everyone but one vlan or ip

netmeter is free and will show traffic passed but wont show based on lan or wan.

So if laptop 1 transfers 1gb to laptop 2 .. it will show 1gb transfered but you wont know if it was local or over the internet.

yup, thats a protocol, not a port.

You need to foward port 1723, and allow the passing of protocol 47 this can be done with a ACL on a buisness class firewall ... or a checkbox on a home grade router.

in his example the switch just controls access.

The AP is what users will connect to, and that is pluged into the switch.

The vlans on the switch just prevent the office vlan from talking to the public vlan .. and vice versa

FYI, this is a small business, would that change the IP addressing scheme? Why not a random range from 192.0.1.1 to 223.255.254.254? Say 199.1.30.0 so i can increase security and remember that specific business?

192.168.x.x is a valid private range .. 192.0.x.x is owned by someone.

i think you mean 192.168.x.x, but there is no point in subneting it into anything smaller.

You can do a vlan for the wireless, or another subnet. If you router supports a second subnet that may be the easiest way.

Bad latency, packet loss, and other bad things are normal for satcom internet.

As for your setup, its simple and will work jsut fine.

I also think you just need one router.

When you have to reset it to get it working .. what do you have to do?

hoov, as explained by Sonic Tech Support, the Sonic Firewall has to handle DHCP for the network. That is why I had to turn it off on the AD Server to begin with. This worked fine for like 9 months.

Never beleve a sonicwall tech .. Most techs are morons ... or else they would not we still working ...

Every case of this i have seen of this was because somone put a internet dns server inside the server or the workstations dns settings.

Domain controlers should have their own IP in dns settings
Servers should have their own IP in dns settings

if you have not used ntop ... it is so much more detailed then bandwithD.

You should install it to try it ... it can help you track down who is using bandwidth.

pfsense does not require much to route, but once you start adding packages you need that extra ram.

Like snort and ntop. If you want both you should have 4gb +

Ntop is a must! lets you see what hosts are using bandwidth in real time. It also shows where and what users are doing and going.

the port is not open on the outgoing firewall? What port? It is rare for a admin to close ports like that outgoing. If it is indeed closed .. then go get your own network.

Why do you need to cut back servers?

I would agree with yeold, 4 or 5 servers is the lowest i would go. As for a nas box, why buy more hardware when he has all those servers?

When i start a new job, i only do break / fix work for the first fiew months. You dont know enough about the network, to do ...

if your fios router was set to use a 192.168.x.x ip on the inside you should not need to have the linksys.

I would double check your config. Perhaps you do not have dhcp on in the fiso router? I know for a fact you can have more computers behind that fios router.

To do anything nice with vmware, you need a san. Cant do DRS, HA, DR, vmotion without one. So no failover (HA).

I would say removing 6 servers is a very bad idea.

Exchange should not be running on a DC
BBE must be run on a non exchange server
You should have 2 DC servers.

Perhaps you can let us ...

or you could set your router to foward ports this way

Outside port 3389 to inside port 3389 192.168.1.100
Outside port 3300 to inside port 3389 192.168.1.101
Outside port 3001 to inside port 3389 192.168.1.102

Most home routers support port redirection from a outside port, to a diff inside port.

I would not count on traffic shaper in pfsense to much, it detects my BT traffic as Edonkey, even when the BT que is empty.

I heard they are improving the shaper in V2.0

What kind of PLC is it? Step 7?

Does the siemesn software support nic teaming .. (does each nic on the "server" have its own ip .. or is it sharing a virtual ip?) You cant just throw two nics in a pc ...
