Good, glad you got it working. Surprised the firmware was part of your problems. The older firmware, while buggy, had nothing that I remember impacting OOL.
Now on to tweaking the connection. That should keep you busy for a short while......

In Control Panel, Networking, Properties find Internet Protocol and hit Properties again. Verify that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected. This should allow you to get you address from the router. Also, from your workstation, attempt to ping 192.168.1.1, which is the default address of ...

We discussed this once before. The conclusion was that nothing one a single PC would be able to manage bandwidth this way. One process would not be able to track the usage of others. I think your best bet would be to set up a Linux box as a router and then use the Quality Of Service utilities that ...

Say you have a 128 up cap. Envision your use of that bandwidth with some sort of flow meter, similar to a tachometer on a car. A web server or FTP server or mail server will mostly have that tachometer sitting just above idle, with occasional bursts up into the mid range, and a rare burst towards ...

What's the big deal about hosting servers? I mean, it's not like they can exceed their given bandwidth. For example, if you are capped at 50k... you are entitled to use it. Running a gaming server will not use over 50k and "HOG" other people's bandwidth. I don't see the logic in the arugment that ...

Why chance it? Maybe because you want to use your broadband connection for why you bought it -- to do new\different\exciting things. If you limit it web browsing and just downloading files, it is quite boring. We spend this extra money (double dialup or more at times) because it gives us freedom to ...

Even Netstat needs to capture information while you transfer to a site. He is internal to his providers network, he shouldn't see that much fluctuation over such a sort period of time.

No, but from my perusing the newgroups. The DOCSIS standard allows for up to 2000 users per node, with a recommendation for well below that (1000-1500). @Home has a tendancy to push the 2000 limit, rather then leave breathing room. One reason why OOL broke away, because they did not like the way ...

Nothing need be done manually. TZO runs as a service on Windows 2000\NT and constantly pings their server. If the originating address changes they update their records to reflect it and walla, my domain name points to my new address. It takes about 20-30 minutes from the time the IP changes until ...

Nodes matter only when they become saturated. Although, there is plenty of downstream bandwidth available. And the limited upstream is plenty if divided right (caps) and they monitor and split as required.

Agreed.... 384kpbs would be fair, but 128 is such a ridiculously low number it is insane. Don't give me the crap about the node bandwidth either! There is plenty for a higher cap, unless they just do not know how to engineer their network properly.

Well, I'll give you want you want. I think it is unfair! Such a ridiculously low upload cap could be potentially stiffling new ideas, and surely the way people use the connection.

I don't agree with the upload cap at that speed either. It should be something more reasonable. My provider, OOL, is much more realistic with their upload caps (Speed test: Speed 3398(down)/1090(up) kbps). I have read their techs state that they initially tested the 128kbps cap, but found it had a ...

BTW, I have no problem with Napster. Maybe they didn't forward the port through to their workstation. I know that if you don't forward the port it will cause issues. You could also set your workstation as the DMZ machine. Then its the same a not having the LinkSys between your modem and that machine.

Well, I agree in the past the LinkSys had some issues, but the new beta firmwares are looking real good. I have had mine for quite some time and each firmware revision seem to fix one thing and break another. I think with the next official release they should have most issues tidied up.
