cable or dsl
I curently have dsl 768/768 more like 550/550, I will be getting Road Runner Cable on the 20th of this month 5 days after talking to them, now that was fast, will try it out for a month, my experience with dsl has been real good except the price, what do you guys prefer dsl or cable and what do you think of both, RR says they will gve me 2mb download and 300k upload, cya.

It is good that you prefered cable for internet.
The advantages I see is the difference in speed compared to ADSL.
But there are a little limitations to Cable too. The whole cable bandwidth is shared among the users in your area.
Dont mind me, becuz even at itz worst speed itz still faster than a normal DSL service.
Now a dayz, when more and more people go for people and the demand goes on increasing, it might affect the whole service a little bit.
Hopefully the Cable providers will put some improvements in their services too.
Good luck with Cable

DSL bandwidth is shared among users in your area as well, as the DSL line is only dedicated back to your local phone exchange (central office). From here to the internet, there is some sort of ATM trunk used.

Who has more troubles depends on your provider. Here in NJ, we have Bell Atlantic as the phone company and they have done an abysmal job with their DSL service. The speed is capped at 640/90.
Our cable company is Cablevision (Optimum Online) and they are the exact opposite. They do not cap the down speed (I have gotten over 700k/sec on dls) and their upstream cap is 1 mb. They do a very good job of making sure the nodes don't get overloaded and that they have ample bandwidth to their backbone provider.
I have heard horror stories about @Home. They cap the up speed at about 1/10th what I have (with OOL) and they overload the nodes so much that downstream bandwidth suffers dramatically. Road Runner seems to be somewhere in between from what I have read. They caps are similar to Optimum Online's but their service & support isn't on the same level.
All in all, I think you will be better off with cable. You will certainly see better speeds.

Umm, they both have theif fair share of outages. From what i've seen at www.dslreports.com people who get RR have sucky speeds, and some have GREAT speeds. It all depends on ur local cable provider. Peace

From Megapath.net:
** Speed 3816(down)/617(up) kbps **
(At least 76 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logging result
Finish.
From Linkline.com:
** Speed 2072(down)/642(up) kbps **
(At least 41 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logging result
Finish.
From Nac.net:
** Speed 3656(down)/562(up) kbps **
(At least 73 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logging result
Finish.
These speed tests was taken at dslreports, which is accurate to me. Ok, I choose cable over dsl, because of the speeds I'm getting on Roadrunner. DSL, at least SWBELL DSL, can't beat RR speeds, if you want to go ahead and spend $185 for 6 mbps dsl. And some of us can't afford 6 Mbps dsl, so that's why we get cable.
I worked hard to achieve these speeds, and I'm sure when 3am comes, it will be more faster than anything. I also went to regedit.com, and tried their unix Tcip tweak for Win9x, it may have boost my speeds up some. Also I tried higher rwin numbers from speedguide's old website, and find one that worked, and finally shutted off PMTUDiscovery.
Websites load faster now for me! I don't care about running servers, because if I want to, I'd wait until something better come to town that has faster upload speeds to allow web hosting, like SDSL, a cheap T1 or T3, or something.

Computer specs:
Dell Dimension 2350 with a 1.7Ghz Intel Celeron Proccesor, Windows XP Home Edition, 80 Gig hard drive, 768Mb of DDRAM PC2100, CDRW and cdrom. Cox.net at 4Mbps down and 512Kbps up.

O.K. this is the deal..I had cable with charter clogline. When I first got it, it was great and then the service started to suck. They capped me big time!! Anyhow, I got Bellsouth DSL and with a few speed tweaks on the registry, I couldn't fathom surfing the net without it!! Bellsouth here by me has no bandwith issues or problems and I always get great speeds! My preference is DSL and I will never go back to cable unless they increased the D/L speed to 2-3MB and the upload speed to 1-2Mb just like some of you lucky farts out there are getting!!
I wish it was that simple for me. After having connectivity problems (routing and/or sync) w/ three DSL providers (Orconet via PacBell, Telocity via North Point, and Earthlink via Covad) and after two go arounds w/ AT&T@Home (on the second now), which is extremely fast when it works (2-5mbps down/500kbps-1.1mbps up), I'm getting a business SDSL connection (from Megapath), which is five times the amount and many, many times slower than my AT&T@Home (when it rarely works). Also, it's slower than two of the three DSL services that I've had. BTW, Megapath will be my 5th ISP in the last two and a half years. Plus, as I mentioned above, I'm on my second bout, so to speak, w/ AT&T.Originally posted by TeenInternetAddict:

Finish.
My caps are 2000/386 so I'm very happy.

I got my road runner cable yesterday, these are the results after a few speed tests 1950kbps(down)/290kbps(upload), the service says 2mb down 300k up, called and got rid of my dsl service even though it was slower in the download speed it was faster on the upload speed and in games I had lower and more steady pings with dsl, but it's still fast with cable and it's half the price, the dsl service was 768/768 but I got more like 550/550, at the moment I am happy with the cable, I just hope it doesn't regress with more people signing up, cya.
