This occasionally happens with any ISP. Its annoying but rarely fatal.
Here is the dirty little secret that ISP's dont want you to know:
Most DNS arent very concerned about who uses them. They could care less where the request comes from, their ISP or not.

First step in any computer troubleshooting must always be to verify physical connections. Yours are still connected, but could be going bad. Replace the cable from phone jack to modem is easiest and cheapest. Replace the cat-5 from modem to comp is next.

Its been a few years since I was in the DSL field, but at that time you couldnt use a line-conditioner or voltage protector on the phone line because of the way DSL works.
Something about the voltage protector changing the sine wave of the signal thereby canceling out the way DSL works ...

Do you really have to have a combination device? Best advice is to have separate Modem and Router. I have had DSL for over 5 years and have had to change modems twice (one upgrade, one failure) and am on my 2nd router (soon to be 3rd due to a port failure).
