My first question would be: Why are you trying to setup a router behind your cable modem, which is essentially a router? If you are trying to network, you should be using a switch or hub behind the c/m.

I've not tested wireless for latency with regards to gaming, but at 11mbps, a wireless lan is much faster than even your internet connection (1.5 mbps for cable (supposedly)). You could have both of the systems browsing the net at the same time and not see a real performance drop on the lan.

A_S was reading my mind. Win2K w/Term Services (or Citrix if you can splurge). You can pick up wyse winterms for about $370 a pop and run sessions. Your major consideration would be server horsepower then.

If you are pinging, browsing, etc. then it sounds like you are establishing tcp/ip communication. Like cyberskye asked, what kind of "tcp" connection are you trying to make? Are you trying to browse the internet or find a system on a network?

Unless you are planning to access novell servers, you won't need the netware client. I would also remove netbeui (while not a bad protocol, it was really designed for small networks and won't be used in your current config). I believe the answer to this question has to do with timing. By setting a minimum frame size in the original 802.3 spec, the frame would have a chance to make it through the whole network (limited in size by 5-4-3 rule) thereby avoiding collisions. But I could be wrong. I think I'll do some research ...

To answer the original question, no , I don't believe you will be able to decypher the scopeid with a sniffer/analyzer. That's what makes it a very good lockdown for netbios (but not a cure-all).
