IE 5.5

Post by AmdAce »

Ok, I don't usually ask for help (you don't learn much that way), but this one has me stumped. I have a client with a new system and a fresh load of win98se. The problem occurs when typing a url into the address bar in IE. It started with IE 5 so I went to 5.01 then 5.01 sp2 then 5.5 all with the same result. As soon as you start typing the system will hang for upwards of 2 minutes. Has anyone run across this frustrating problem? I have tried out the ms kb and the web but I can find only a few references to this problem and the suggested fixes don't work.
Any ideas?

I know what you mean by that little problem, it used to happen to me all the time. You see, Internet Explorer is so tightly integrated with Windows that if you start typing something in the address field, it will actually start lookin through your local drives first, i.e. CD Rom, HD. This used to happen to me all the time and it would really piss me off, it doesn't do it with Win2K though.

Or if you can't find it on CD you can turn off autocomplete and that should do the trick....if you don't wanna mess with uninstalling and reinstalling and stuff.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. It turns out I turned off the wrong auto-complete ( i was turning off inline autocomplete under advanced). I found the right auto complete, turned it off and that fixed the ie problem. (thanx chevy, you made me look again. i still like ford though) But, ie wasn't the true problem. There is still a hang problem when browsing the drives (this is something my client failed to point out to me. I just love finding things out after the fact  ). So i'm having my client run sfc and restoring original system files to see if another pgm is conflicting with windows.
Thanx again for the replies.
