Does anyone here know the specific codes/commands that the cable technician uses to review the actual connections between the cable carrier and the modem itself?

My folks have this modem and they want to attach a wireless router so my little brother can get on-line in his bedroom. Firstly does it has available ports for a wireless router and secondly and recommendations.

ok the command your looking for is done in command prompt.

enter the fallowing exactly "ping www.yahoo.com -t" then press enter.
go make a pot of coffee and come back and press ctrl c. that will end the ping.
if your ping is less than 50 ms, your running great, if its more than 100ms. call your isp and get tech support on the line and tell them that your ping is slow.
but rember that you ping is based on the server that your conecting to as well as your speed. if you can get the ip addy of the site that your gamming on ping it using the formentioned command but in steed of useing the url enter the ip addy in its place that shoold tell you if its on your end or the host servers end if you can ping yahoo and you ping is low but when you ping the gamming server and its high its the host server not your conection.

I'm running on Toshiba's Tecra8000 lptops, Win98SE-300Mhz Procs-64MB RAM- Using USB Cable Mod (No LAN port on my Tecra8K-old school Lap's-)

Question:
In your opinion, is it my ISP problems (due to >100ms ping time) or my connection hops to reach the host [yahoo], or isit coz of my conn speed [512kbps]

Do you have any suggestion how to tweak on my speed? Thanks broo..

I have a Motorolla SB5100 cable modem and I lost my password to get onto my network. How in the world do I get my password reset? Do I have to buy a new modem?
by anonymous - 2009-09-22 08:31
the 5101 does not have passwords on the gui... so the network password is something else on your network. ..... for the game play you may need to get a router and open your ports bud that is probley why game play is slow

Great product, too bad now they charge support fees so look out sbg900 people if you want wireless security be prepaird to pay $30 bucks

I am using an Eee PC 1000H and it will not connect, ever!
by anonymous - 2010-04-16 00:49
I like the system although I have recognized that this modem could work better than it does. I have Comcast and occassionally I get dropped while surfing on the net. I believe this may be a memory and/or coding problem. For normal television viewing it works fantastic and I haven't had a problem yet. Since its relatively free with the cable pkg, I really can't complain but I'm disappointed. : ( Right now I'm considering purchasing a Cisco modem for $80 to resolve the USB connectivity issue. This motorola type only has cable and ethernet connections .
by Philip - 2010-04-16 13:15
Ethernet connections are generally more stable than USB.

I've recently relocated my modem to a cable jack that requires a 2 way splitter to accommodate my TV and the modem and I can't get the SB5100 modem to go online. It will connect fine if I connect it directly to the cable jack but not if connected through the 2 way splitter. Any suggestions? The 2 way splitter and cables have been tested and are all good.
by Philip - 2010-05-04 17:43
I'd first make sure it is s splitter and not a tap... It may also help trying to switch the TV/modem ends of the splitter.

If it is a splitter, make sure it is a quality one. Splitters generally introduce another -3dB (or more) signal loss, lowering the signal that gets to your modem. It may sometimes be enough to cause your cable modem not to sync properly with the headend, especially if there is more than one splitter between your drop and the modem.

You may have to check the signal levels in the modem's self-diagnostic web interface, or call your cable company to run a line test.
by anonymous - 2010-05-04 20:44
Thanks for your response. I was able to purchase an amplified splitter and it solved my problem and enhanced my TV picture as well.
by Philip - 2010-05-05 10:44
The only problem with amplifiers is that they amplify both signal and noise on the line, so it is generally better to keep splitting to a minimum to get the best possible signal.

I sent my 5101 modem to PA two weeks ago to be repaired or replaced. Hope to hear from them soon 5-14-10

This is an excellent cable modem. It gave me a Mbps download and Mbps upload on a service tier that was rated for only half that. The best part about it is that I have had it for almost 7 years with no problems at all.
by anonymoose - 2010-09-06 17:16
So I guess this is a pretty ancient model of modem, but I'm way off in the boonies and my download speeds cap at more than 3MB/s, probably around 28-30mbps. My upload speeds fluctuate a lot, but when I'm downloading anything slower than 500kb/s, it's usually an extremely busy day (a terrorist took over a nearby building), or the source I'm downloading from is just slow.

As for gaming, it's better than my computer is. All around a solid choice. I've had zero problems so far.

5/5 from me.

first time I've ran into an internet provider that provides me with a modem that doesn't bridge to my Linksys wireless router. lol Unbelievable. And they don't even tell their customers, not even when you call tech support.

The company in question is NPG cable in Flagstaff, Arizona, but it's really Cablevision.

The reason they don't allow the bridge to perfectly fine personal equipment is that they want you to rent their router instead.

They should just execute the executives that came up with this corrupt business plan.

Can you help? Where or how can I find the password for my Motorola SB 5100.
Thank You!
by Osmic - 2011-01-13 14:04
That I know of there is no password for the modem.

If you're talking about the router, then you'll probably have to do a hard restart to reset the router to factory defaults. You can google your router make and model to find the manual which will tell you how to do this.
by anonymous - 2011-01-13 14:10
Huh? I didn't know it was possible to 'bridge' a modem and a router. I would think you would want to connect them, buy why and how would you bridge them together?
by nyle - 2011-02-20 02:32
It connects to my computer but it wont connect to the internet for xbox 360 live. Help???
by anonymous - 2011-04-06 05:48
My SB5100 is 6 years old now (since 2005) and has no problem at all. My ISP is Rogers and my monthly usage is more than 500 GB for 15 people.
