The Wi-Fi Alliance said Tuesday that its Passpoint technology, that will allow people to automatically connect smartphones and tablets to public Wi-Fi hotspots without any effort, will begin certifying devices in June.

With Passpoint, devices automatically identify and join Wi-Fi networks, and users are not required to complete a manual login process, according to the Alliance. Passpoint also automatically configures the connection to use WPA2 encryption for additional security.

"We know Passpoint is going to delight our user base – people love Wi-Fi and want to connect easily everywhere they go," said Edgar Figueroa, the chief executive of the Wi-Fi Alliance, in a statement. "Passpoint also addresses the pressing service provider needs for data offload and subscriber loyalty, and Passpoint gives Wi- Fi equipment vendors a single industry-wide solution to satisfy service provider requirements."

"Adoption of Passpoint will take a shorter amount of time than what you'd expect," he said. "The first release of Passpoint will be in June and we will productions available throughout the following months. ... I would not be surprised if we already started seeing roaming agreements between carriers as well."
