Verizon debuts 5G WiFi router

Beginning October 1, Verizon will launch 5G Home Internet in Minneapolis & St. Paul, bringing the blazing fast 5G Home Internet service to customers in eight cities, along with newly designed hardware including easy self-setup using augmented reality.

The new router, made by Wistron for Verizon (known as the Wistron LV55), can be placed inside by a window, so there's no external install needed. A smartphone app guides you where to put the unit. The device has Wi-Fi 6 and one Ethernet port. The Ethernet port is important because Verizon's millimeter-wave system is sometimes faster than the maximum speed of Wi-Fi routers. The company says customers can expect typical speeds around 300 Mbps and depending on location, maximum speeds up to 1 Gbps. The router also has 4G LTE capabilities on bands 2/5/13/66, but Verizon will only sell it in 5G-capable locations.

The cost of the service is $50 per month for Verizon customers and $70 per month for non-Verizon customers. To entice customers, Verizon is throwing in YouTube TV for one month and Disney+ for one year for new 5G Home Internet customers. For smart home enthusiasts, it's also tossing in a free Amazon Smart Home Bundle, which includes an Echo Show 5, Ring Stick Up Cam, Echo Dot and Amazon Smart Plug.
