Sprint to launch first US WiMAX phone tomorrow2010-03-22 09:48 by DanielaTags: WiMAX, Sprint, HTC
The long awaited 'first WiMAX phone' is set to be unveiled by Sprint at this week's CTIAWireless event in Las Vegas. It is not actually a world first, since Korea's KT and Russia' Yota have offered smartphones for over a year. But it will be an important breakthrough for Sprint's mobile broadband service, which runs on Clearwire's WiMAX network, and which is its key weapon in stemming churn among high value customers this year. Like Yota's GSM/WiMAX handset, Sprint's 'Supersonic' CDMA/WiMAX device will be made by HTC. It will be important in upping the ante behind Sprint's increasingly intense marketing of its 'Sprint 4G' service, while it still has the exclusive on promising next generation mobile broadband (along with Clearwire itself and its cableco partners). By year end, we will see Verizon Wireless joining the fray with its LTE-based offering, scoring PR hits even if the offering is confined just to a handful of markets at first. The Supersonic should make its debut during Sprint CEO Dan Hesse's presentation on Tuesday. Hesse has been increasingly upbeat about the contribution that the Clearwire joint venture will make to the CDMA cellco's faltering subscriber progress. At the operator's last quarterly results announcement, he said: "Expanding the coverage of 4G in 2010 will be an important catalyst for continued improvement in Sprint's postpaid subscriber results."
