After the Google I/O conference yesterday, it seems that Google is seeking to block Microsoft's new YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 because it blocks ads and allows downloading of videos from YouTube's site, in violation of its terms of service. Microsoft had recently released an updated YouTube app for Windows Phone that provides an experience similar to the first-party YouTube app for Android and iOS, allowing users to sign in and have greater control of the app than the older YouTube experience on Windows Phone. However, the problem with the Microsoft-developed app is that it doesn't support in-video advertising, and Google had recently sent a cease and desist letter to Microsoft. At Google's I/O developer conference, CEO Larry Page also complained that Outlook.com Microsoft's free, Web-based email formerly known as Hotmail wouldn't allow Google to "interoperate", or meld elements of Outlook messages into Google's email services. Recently, Microsoft has started incorporating Google instant messaging into Outlook.com, and Page complained about what he saw as a non-quid pro quo.
In response, Microsoft in a statement Wednesday said the company would "be more than happy to include advertising, but need Google to provide us access to the necessary APIs."
