The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that it intends to effectively block AT&T's proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile by referring the matter to an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) for review. The chairman, Julius Genachowski, made the move after the commission's staff concluded that the deal would harm consumers, kill jobs and result in an overly concentrated wireless phone industry, FCC officials said. The FCC decision has pleased campaigning group Public Knowledge, which has been lobbying against the deal from the start.
