Fastest Wi-Fi ever is almost ready for real-world use2013-01-14 10:55 by DanielaTags: Wi-Fi, 802.11ad
Chipmaker Wilocity demonstrated its wireless chip, at CES 2013, that can hit the mark of 4.6Gbps. Theoretically, WiGig (or Wireless gigabit), the technology on which the chip is based can hit speed upto 7Gbps but its frequency can be blocked easily. Wilocity's current chip overcome this issue and makes it a potential candidate for commercially successful product. It's possible the next wireless router you buy will use the 60GHz frequency as well as the lower ones typically used in Wi-Fi, allowing for fast performance when you're within the same room as the router and normal performance when you're in a different room. WiGig builds on top of the just-completed 802.11ad wireless standard. Wilocity's first-generation chip with 802.11ad can be used in computers and docking stations that connect devices to monitors, keyboards, and mice, but the chip can't be used in wireless routers.
