The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced at CES 2013 in Las Vegas that an updated USB 3.0 specification should arrive in 2014. It will offer speeds of up to 10Gb/s, or twice that currently offered by the existing USB 3.0 standard. The specification for USB 3.0, aka SuperSpeed, was finished in 2008, but it wasn't until four years later that USB 3.0 really took off as a standard part of Intel hardware in 2012.

"With USB technology continuing to be the data and power delivery path of choice across personal computing and consumer electronics, we are always looking ahead to how to best improve user experience and connectivity performance," said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group chair, at the announcement. "Doubling SuperSpeed USB performance will be especially beneficial for emerging USB docking and storage applications."

To take advantage of the double-speed USB 3.0 interface, devices such as computers, hubs, and digital cameras will need new USB controller hardware. However, the new version of USB 3.0 uses the same connectors, so existing USB devices can be plugged into the higher-speed ports.
