Carriers move to eliminate bill shock

The CTIA wireless association is today expected to announce new billing practices designed to help consumers avoid 'bill shock'. The move by the CTIA is in reaction to proposals made by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and will cover about 97 percent of all mobile subscribers in the country.

"Consistent with the FCC's ongoing efforts, these actions harness technology to empower consumers, and ensure consumers get a fair shake, not bill shock," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement.

According to the new rules, companies would send alerts when customers exceed their plans' limits and are subject to overage charges. Customers traveling abroad would be warned that they are about to incur often pricey international roaming fees.
