Tech giant Apple announced Tuesday it is suing Israel's NSO Group, seeking to block the world's most infamous hacker-for-hire company from breaking into Apple's products, like the iPhone.

In a legal complaint filed in US federal court on Tuesday, Apple called NSO "amoral 21st-century mercenaries" who have used cyber-surveillance technology to enable human rights abuses. The suit seeks to permanently prevent NSO Group from using the Silicon Valley giant's software, services or devices.

"State-sponsored actors like the NSO Group spend millions of dollars on sophisticated surveillance technologies without effective accountability," Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, said in a statement about the filing. "That needs to change."

The company points out the spyware from NSO Group only targeted a relatively "small number" of Apple users worldwide. Nevertheless, in some cases, the surveillance tools were powerful enough to hijack an iPhone or Mac device simply by sending a maliciously crafted message to the intended victim.

Facebook previously sued NSO Group in 2019 over allegations that its spyware had used the platform to target more than 1,400 WhatsApp users in almost two dozen countries.
