Can't ping default gateway...

Post by Steve-O »

My provider has evidently changed the IP of their default gateway. I had a shortcut to a batch file on my desktop to ping the default gateway if I was experiencing surfing problems or E-mail problems. It used to work, but now I get no response, even though I can still surf and E-mail. I'm behind a router with three PCs accessing the Net. Any suggestions on a command line to resolve the provider's IP for pinging purposes? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Later...

are you dhcp? if so try ipconfig /all

If not, try tracert yahoo.com or any other host - the first ip off your LAN is a good bet.

Could be that they are dropping icmp for security reasons - pings can be the building blocks of DoS attacks

Thanks, Cyberskye, for a speedy reply. I tried the ipconfig/all and found the IP for the provider. I pinged it, but no response. Next I tried the tracert to yahoo. I verified the IP as being the same as it was in the ipconfig command. What is the ICMP you referred to that may have been dropped by the provider? Should I mention it when I E-mail them and ask why I can't ping for diagnostic purposes? Thanks again...
