my IP and router - what is it?

Post by mountainman »

I have RR cable internet and I know that my real IP starts with 24. However, when I try to set-up my FTP server program, it says 192.168.1.1. I know this isn't my IP address for people to get to my computer. How can I find out my REAL IP address.

Also, will I have to forward some ports on my router? I would like it to be set-up with something different than port 21.

Do I need to go into the settings and do that? What am I actually doing in the set-up? I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 v2. I know how to get to the setup and the different settings. I think that it would be under the "advanced" and then "filters", but I dont know after that.

Thank you.

One more thing. When I try what I think is my IP addy in IE, it just freezes up and "not responding". However, when I try the IP addy of the router, that works OK.

Please let me know.

Thanks all!

http://www.grc.com - IP

For the router, just forward 21. I have a netgear <I don't know>, and that's the only port that one needs to forward.
So trade that typical for something colorful, and if it's crazy live a little crazy!

I would also like to add that since most of us have dynamic ips (they change every few days).. u can go to http://www.dyndns.org and get a free host mask.. (like jumpduo.dyndns.org...or whatever u want)... FREE.. and u can just a client proggie that'll check and update the ip automatically and not take much ram.

If you go into your router Admin page, it should have your "outside" IP in there.

As far as not being able to get to your ftp from the same machine it's on, thats fairly normal I believe. Try it from another machine, or PM someone the IP here, and see if you can get to it. I know on my ftp server, I cannot get to it from the same machine serving it.

thinking more...if you are trying to connect through an FTP client to the FTP server on the same machine, you have to use your internal IP.

You should be able to specify the port within your FTP Server program.

What are you using for an FTP server?

to forward ports;

To forward the ports:

In the LinkSys router administration program, select the Advanced tab. Then select the Forwarding tab.

For each port, enter the :

Port number or port range
Protocol(s)
IP address of the computer to which you are forwarding those ports.
