I work for an ASP. Our clients/customers are medical facilities and hospitals. One of the high points of the software we use is that it enables Medical facilities a faster and easier way for them to submit medical claims for payment to insurance companies. The way this is done is by formatting the data in aparticular manner (how the insurance company wants to receive it) and then compressing the files and sendiong them to whats called a clearinghouse via a MODEM. They are currently working on getting FTP up and running but it is going to be some time.
We are incountering a lot of issues with these modems. But I honestly don't think that it is an issue with the modems. I am having a great deal of difficulty in getting the Software company to look at their plug-in that does the actual transmitting of the file. I t keeps throwing me an error "Could not set protocol to Kermit." Sometimes it is able to set the protocol to Kermit - sometimes it can't. Why might it be having intermitten problems with setting the protocol to Kermit?
Plug-in? Or maybe something else?
I would appreciate any input or thoughts that you might have. Unfortunately I am not very educated in the way of modems. I am trying to make this as brief as possible so...if you have questions let me know.
Thank you in advance!!!!!
.............one of these days I will figure it all out.
what operating system are these machines running? what brand modems? i don't think it's the modems either. i believe it's software. of course, i've no way to tell without seeing the computers.. shrug
All clients I have...I strickly use USR modems. No matter what modem though...latest drivers installed.
Sometimes turning down the baud rate on the modem can help data integrity. Having it set at 230k or 115k, even 57,6... can lead to issues.
Also on the client side...dunno what OS they are on, but if 9X...should have the latest dial up adapter installed.
Probably NT 4 Workstation though if a data transmitting terminal in a health office.
Most of my healt-care clients have gone over to broadband though....saying your place is moving to FTP is still behind the times....should be setting up secure VPN.
MORNING WOOD Lumber Company
Guinness for Strength!!!
DB=SQL
OS=WIN2000Term Server
Citrix
Modems=Multitech
Baud Rate works at 57,600 or lower...faster yields major errors
Users connect via Internet with a citrix web client
...boy talk about mixing it up, hugh...? Gotta love it!
The modems use a modified Saxxcom.ocx file (modified by Software Co.)
I know USRobotics are great but try talking my Co. into splurging for new hardware in this economy. anyway ....
had some issues with the driver - dell server wants to use plug and play driver - but the plug and play driver does not work with the software. Go figure - why would the software be concerned about which driver? Not my place to ask. Software is not ours. So must work with what I have.
As for comments for Secure VPN we do have that but not for connections with these huge clearinghouses. There are only a few in the country and they are just starting with bringing up FTP transmission technology. Medical field is WAY behind the time and has been for a while. Been in Medicine for 15 years.
We have a T1s out to our clients logging into our site but the issues are with these huge clearinghouses.

The Business that we send all of the Electronic claims to only uses modems. And that is pretty standard from what I have learned in the business. There are a lot of issues with patient confidentiality. I am not really sure myself. Most Medical facilities use proprietary systems not PCs. They have just always been behind the times. All the money goes to INS Co, MDs and Diagnostic equipment.

Its been linked to a host of possible side effects. Won't say exactly what, but I'd suggest stocking up on Zorvirax and neosporin creame, maybe some calomine lotion too.
Kermit? Only reason I can think of it that Kermit will transfer data that lots of other proggies choke on. I use a data collection package with a HP-48GX calc, and when it goes haywire, I sometimes can drag data outta it with Kermit when all other protocols fail.

No... it's a good thing and I am your friend.
I just love a woman who keeps talking shop even when the guy next to her is buying her drinks and falling allover himself to impress her. Still… she stays focused on the technical subject while all the time looking like a Angel and turning me on like I was a light switch.

As for the question, this is way out of my field, I do hardware, but not networking. The only thing, about your problem, that comes to mind is a hardware issue. How old are these modems that are being used? Is has the firmware been recently updated? Is there a newer Win2k driver for the modem and if so, are there any patches for known problems? Have you tried a Microsoft search for a similar error in their database? Hmm sorry I can't thinkg of too much to help you out here, but I hope it helps you get started. Also on the other side of the modems, has the other client updated or change anything on their side?
