Re-compiling your kernel won't fix your problem. THe drivers are already there. Ask yourself, was the GUI initialized during the Mandrake install? If yes, then your card does work under Linux
Log in as root, run xf86config. Pick the correct hardware settings and your done!!

Which database did you look in? The ati driver will work with all radeon cards. When you run xf86config select the ati driver for your card.
Providing you've chosen the correct settings X Windows will start. If you get some kind of funny error message look into the log file.

the database i looked in is the one x86config brings up and is shows all those profiles in ur link but not my 8500.
can i just set ti to generic?
Actually the link does.
What version of x are you running? I am not familiar with the mandrake verisoning scheme, but yours sounds to be newer..
Skye
4.2.1: Accelerated support is provided for Mach64, Rage, Rage 128 and Radeon chips by the "ati" driver, as is unaccelerated support for all of the others except the Mach8 and some early Mach32 chips.

Did you miss that quote that Cyber delivered? Just try it and see what happens. It's not that complicated, you can also edit the XF86Config-4 file by hand in the /etc/X11 directory.
http://www.xfree86.org/current/ati.html
Read the documentation, it states that if the ati driver is used, and that the driver finds a radeon or rage128 card it will invoke that cards driver for you
http://www.ati.com/support/faq/linux.html
If you still can't get it to work, manually edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and replace the "ati" with "radeon"
Done...
