problems accessing c drive on both computers

Post by jasonpi »

firstly hi every1 my first time here.
secondly i have a problem but let me start by telling you what i have in order for a fix.
i am a subscriber to the blueyonder 1mb cable, i was given a webstar cable modem which is now connected to a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router (model number befsr41 v.2) which is connected to two d-link (dfe-538tx) 10/100 nic's by two rj45 PATCH cables. both machines are using win2000 sp2. in order for me to use the router i had to register the routers mac addresses. but once this was done i did not have to configure any settings.
when i was sharing devices on both machines like the floppy d drive and hard drive i had no problems untill i wanted to access the hard drive in the bedroom and vice versa but it does not show in network neighbourhood WHY?
i am using additional firewall software (ZA basic) but i have tried switching this off but to no avail.
also i am having trouble posting to some newsgroups i.e Outlook express V.5 but no problems with the email.
as my cable operator does not support networks i am somewhat miffed to whats going on.
TIA jason.

Is NetBUEI still installed in both computers and are the drives shared properly? If you're having this problem after the installation of ZA, remove it and see if it works. If it does then reinstall ZA and reconfigure it.

za aint a problem this is happening regardless of za, netbui has not been installed, just using tcp/ip on both machines no other protocols or client software used.

oh i forgot if i do take ZA off both computers will the internal nat firewall of the router be sufficient and how do you configure it as i cannot find the option for this in the configuration page.

In win2k, there c: drive root is shared as \\computername\c$. known as the admin share, this share requires admin privellages to get to. If your using a workgroup, you will need to connect to the share and then supply logon credentials.
If you cannot connect to the admin share of c$, then try creating a new share on each pc and connecting to them.
Don't bother taking of ZA or putting netbui on there.
