Raced a Camaro SS last night... :P

Post by ghost »

Interesting thing occured last night, I raced a Camaro SS. It was my challenge, read on:

I was out last night, just cruising around after dropping my son off, and I see up ahead a lowered Camaro with a trick exhaust, like nothing I'd ever seen before on a Camaro. It looked like the Z28 exhaust, in that the tips were rectangular, but they were next to each other in the middle, like a Corvette.

His license plate read: 0-60 IN2

I caught up with it and flew past him full throttle in the right lane, like a rice-by, then braked hard to let him catch up, unlike a rice-by, heh. My way of saying, "Let's play."

As he rolled up next to me, I looked over and saw the familiar "SS" emblem on the side and thought, "Uh, I think I just picked on the wrong guy." :p

He got next to me, his g/f was with him (I guess g/f), then nailed it and I heard the unmistakable LS1 sound.

(You true gearheads know the sound, it's distinct, like the Mustang 4.6L.)

So off he roared, and I watched him. It was from a 40 roll, and I expected him to take off faster than he did. I pursued and we approached a red light, but there was a car in the left lane in front of me and the Camaro was in the right lane now, no way to line up with him, so I fell in right behind him, hoping that he would try to leave me at the light to see if I could catch him.

That's exactly what he tried to do. :D

The light turned green and we both took off, each car losing traction in the process, then hooking. The end of first gear came up quickly and the GHOSTSS grabbed second with a loud squawk, then ran second gear all the way out and hit third.

Guess what? He couldn't leave me! I stayed a half car length behind him the whole time, just like I was at the light, and didn't give ground at all! I fully expected him to start pulling ahead with me trying to catch up, but to my complete surprise I hung right with him the whole time.

He finally slowed down after 65 or so, and I took the left lane and pulled up next to him, clicked on the interior light and gave him the thumbs up, and he replied in kind.

My observations:

1. In a full quarter-mile run I'm sure he would have beat me. My car runs a 14.2 @ 95.

2. 0-60 my car rocks, hell, in the 1/8-mile I can beat an LS1 Firebird at the dragstrip (I've done it, after talking with the guy too, his car was running just fine). Most every car I've raced at the strip I've beaten in the 1/8. It's the second 1/8 where I lose.

3. My cam loses power after 5k rpm and my valves float after 5300 (need to fix that when I get a job).

4. I have 4.11 gears. :D

Anybody else have any comments? I felt pretty proud of myself after that run.

Awesome! Wish I could get some races.

Your race with the LS1 is typical, they aren't low-end speed freaks like our LT1s ;) . Especially with your gears and it being an auto makes your car the easy winner out of the hole. Had you raced till about 100-120mph, you would have seen him start to pull once he was at the top of second and/or in third gear (considering if he was an stick). None the less, I'm sure you surprised the hell out of him :) .

The exhaust is an SLP option. Personally, I don't care for it too much but I rather people buy that than get the exhaust I have which once was very elite to have (GMMG exhaust).

Nightowl: I wish it could be considered a kill, but it was just a tie. I'll take that, considering what I was up against. :)

Silver: No nitrous....yet. I'm considering it later, first I'd like to get a blower, set at a mild pressure, <5 psi. A 35% increase in torque will put me over the 500 ft. lb. range.

I agree, the LT1 is the small-block torque KING. :D Any engine that has 90% it's PEAK torque available between 1k and 5k is okay in my book.

Thanks for solving the exhaust mystery for me. It also make me feel better about the race since I know the guy had performed some mods, prob had a Whisper Lid too I would imagine.

I haven't heard of your exhaust.....got pics/links? Or your car for that matter?

Thanks! I feel good about the race.

Some people are such doo-heads, they can't tell the difference even in the daytime.

Not a cop-wannabe here, the one gauge (Fuel Pressure) had to be mounted outside the passenger compartment for safety reasons, and it just looked stupid sitting out there alone, so I matched it with a vacuum/boost gauge, which is currently being used for the vacuum function. It would have been showing boost, had my trans not taken a header last year (and subsequently took my blower money).

i think u could have beet him too! you had to deal with his draft at half a length behind but then again if you were a lil closer than half you may have been slowing him down... wish i coulda seen the race

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box ;).

Yeah, Camaros pull real hard at at top end. We can stay with them but once top end comes our Mustang just falls on it's face and they are gone. BTW, I just got done reading that article in MM&FF on the 2003 Cobra and how to run mid 11s and possibly 10s with a few other changes like Cool J mentioned in the thread JC posted. They really didn't do much at all to get mid 11s, but I think the average driver would probably run high 11s or really low 12s with what they did. (given the average driver is not professional!) Nice job Ghost, you'd take us in the quarter, I think we can probably go a little faster if we really push it, but we have to drive it home and it would suck breaking down at the track. Just curious how much your car weighs and how much HP it has? Been out to the track lately?

These are from the rhyme/poem thread, not sure if you guys saw them...

(Ghost)

His car he claims is a Ghost
More consistent than most

At the line; it's squat and go
It's what his opponents didn't know

His vehicle is a sleeper everywhere he goes
How he has done it; no one quite knows

-------------------------------

(Cool J)

He's got 5.7 liters in his car
Smoking the tires won't get him far

The Z at the end makes him cool
Makes the ricers look like a fool

Staging may take him a million years
At the end he's watching in his mirrors

Don't know if I'd beat you or not, only a race would tell for sure ( :) ), but I did race an older Cobra (late 90's version) and stomped him so bad from first to second that he actually gave up, LOL. Our conversation at the light, before the race, went like this (Barbara was with me, btw):

Me, yelling to the next lane: I hear those are pretty fast! Wanna run?

Cobra guy, eyeing my gauges: Yeah right, whatchoo got?

Me: Just a little V8. Come on, I got about a thousand pounds on you.

Cobra: Uh huh.

Light turned green and like I said he just gave up after an initial effort, but it was soon apparent that he was going to lose so he backed off. I guess it was one of the over-rated versions, I forgot which year they did that (Ford).

I'd get stomped by the Mach 1 if it comes out as promised. I gotta do something soon. There are only two Marauders here in Richmond, haven't seen either one, but I'm sure looking forward to it. :D

My car weighs in the 4400-4500 lb. range.

Horsepower is estimated at 300, based on mods (stock is 260). No dyno runs with this engine yet.

Yeah, we have a '94 and it only has 240HP and only 219 at the rear wheels. Weighs in around 3600 - 3800 pounds I believe. Needs some exhaust to open it up at bit, it still has the 4 original cats on it. I think it is getting some 3 chamber flowmasters and a Bassani X-Pipe. Then it is going to need a new chip because the wonderful engineers thought it would be good to dump extra fuel at 93 MPH so you don't hurt the engine  I finally will get to race at the dragway September 26th when they rent the track out privately again. I will probably be granny shifting ;) I think '96 and up is when you needed atleast 4.10s to wake the Cobras up. They are apparently rev happy lol. I think they originally game with 3.27s so maybe that is what the guy had or he just can't drive/shift at all. The new Cobra comes with 3.55s I believe I remember reading that. Those Marauders are decent, I think one was running low - mid 15s (maybe slightly faster) which is still pretty respectable for such a large vehicle.

Mach 1 article
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out right now. Jeez, I know I'm going to hate what I read. All these new cars coming out and going so fast, right from the factory, I have some serious work to do if I want to stay competitive.

Even the new Neon that's scheduled to come out in 2003 is going to be a decent runner.

Low 15's is very respectable for a huge car like the Marauder, that's what a stock 94-96 Impala SS runs. I'm just a cam away from deep into the 13's though. :D Add a blower and I'm 12's. That'll be good enough to beat most cars.

I just came in from going to the store (just now), raced a guy with an ex cop-car Caprice (called 9C1's, after their options package). First from a light, he tried to follow me like I did with the Camaro SS last night, except I was pulling car lenghts on him, the second time was from a 40 roll side by side. No competition. :D He had intake and exhaust mods, that's it, I talked to him.

Okay, I'm going to read about the Mach 1 now. ;)

We have seen their kind before. They're the heirs of all the murderous ideologies of the 20th century. By sacrificing human life to serve their radical visions, by abandoning every value except the will to power, they follow in the path of fascism, Nazism and totalitarianism. And they will follow that path all the way to where it ends in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies.

I was bored so I started using some online calculators to make some figures even though they are probably not 100% accurate... although they do seem very close with the current numbers that I do know... but it is worth throwing some numbers around anyway...

Original - 240 HP (219 rwhp) ~8.75% loss of HP

240 HP @ 6psi = 337.9858464888404 HP (308.412084921066865 HP with 8.75% loss)

240 HP @ 8psi = 370.6477953184539 HP (338.21611322808918375 HP with 8.75% loss)

1/4 Mile based on weight and HP (assuming weight is 3700 lbs.)

Well, that was fun and not probably real accurate, but still fun :D This is assuming without the exhaust system in place, but none of this is really given because you don't know how the conditions are going to be. Anyway, I'm done rambling and cramming up your thread with figures :)

Gotta great ride there ghost, for a car ;) :p I guess Roundeyes the only other person on here who understands why when guys talk about how fast their car is, I smile. 0-60 in 2 seconds really feels cool, but so does having 500+hp in front of you ;) Great run, id like to race ya sometime :D
