cable modem very slow

Post by f00bar »

Hi,

Within the past week or so I haven't been able to get downloads faster than 20kB/s. When I was first hooked up I was getting 150-200, sometimes higher.

I called my ISP and they got me to search for some of the tcp/ip registry tweaks. I haven't done anything like that, so as expected nothing was found. He then walked me thru a few other things. Nothing worked. So he sent a line tech out. The guy did signal tests, played around with the cabling, and whatever else he did. After that was all said and done there was little to no improvement. He then said it's probably just peak hours and such and to try in the morning. And I said, "what about if I work during the day and only get time in the evening?". He went on and on about signal level good, I'm not a pc tech, yadda yadda, then left.

Yesterday (the day after the line tech came) everything was good! It was back to the way it was when I first hooked up.

Today, when I started to download a few things and it went from 150k slowly down to a stable 15-20kB.
I phoned tech support again, this time inquiring about caps, thinking I might have accidently given a lower cap. They insisted I'm given the same amount of bandwidth as everyone else. he said since my signal level or something is good the problem must be my computer. He walked me thru pretty much the same stuff as I did a few days earlier. That didn't fix it. Then he suggested a complete reinstall. I have a lot of stuff on here, I don't want to reinstall unless they can prove it's my system and I need to to fix it.

I'm thinking they're just blowing me off and don't want to do anything about it. Is there anything I can do to prove it's not my system? (or prove that it is for that matter?)

Thanks

thats funny....my internet speed is going around 60kbps and its usually around about 500bbps. and so I noticed it going 60kbps pretty quick so I emailed them and waited 2 days (I thought that I wouldnt have the problem anymore) but I did so I just got done calling them tonight. All they told me to do is to reset my comp and unplug my modem and go to a speed testing site and thats it. It kept saying 59.7kbps, 60kbps, and all that so a guy is supposed to be comming out to my house Thursday. I dont think its this modem and nor my computer.

Are you running Norton or PC Cillin with the "WEB FILTER" on? This will slow down the connections as it "scans" the web content. If you are turn off that feature.

no... i havent ...I did turn it off becuz my norton anti-virus was doing that to my email. Although I do need to turn the one on for my email. but anyway ....today I finally got back to my speed. I dont know what happend. Its just back to normal now. Thanks anyway. (I knew it was my ISP) Although....does anyone know where a good website is about the "Windows Task Manager" I have a whole bunch of files running under the "Processes" and one of them called "SVCHost" under the "system" is useing all. I do mean 98% of my cpu. It does that every now and then. And I have a Antlon 2000+ . I used to know where a website was where they had a lot of names for the files names to tell you if they are able to be deleted from the list. But I cant remember anymore where that is. I will post this question somewhere else in the correct folder. ~rick
